I agree that being mindful about what you purchase would solve most of the problems.
I just pirate everything, and I only buy stuff I explicitly want to support (after completing the game, of course). I own everything, and I am happy.

That mentality is kinda unfathomable to me though. When I need a new toaster I buy the cheapest one I can find that still works and does what I want. I don't go to toaster-sensei and buy a toaster folded 6 million times and give him a tip to "support" him.

With software, you can always get the best toaster in the world and use it completely for free. This is a given.
Paying for software (unless it's for business) is inherently about whether you want to support the person/company/philosophy behind the product for whatever reason. It's a personal choice. There are very few game devs who I genuinely want to support, and I still hate buying software, so I'd normally rather buy merch that would actually give me something fun I couldn't get otherwise. But there have been cases where I refused to buy merch of games I liked a lot because the people who made the game were just assholes.

Literally first mover advantage. I made this account when i was 17 and, as far as i know, there is no platform that is offering something that i care enough to switch. Maybe if they had the exact same games as Steam, but didn't cave to my countrys local laws that keep me from even accessing, let alone buying, thousands of titles because they don't have an age rating. And if Steam offered a form of age verification that my government deems acceptable even that argument would disappear.

When I buy games I try to do it physically or on GOG. The problem is that most games aren't on GOG.

It's all performative.
People don't actually care about owning games.
They play once and never again.

the list is massive but the ones i personally care about
>achievements
>playtime tracking
>controller compatibility
>best storefront with the largest selection in all of vidya
>gg.deals, fanatical, GMG, etc offer much more flexibility in buying games than any other platform
>reliable and centralized location for my games for over 2 decades
>cloud saves
there's countless other things like workshop and multiplayer features that are irrelevant to me but some people would consider them to be their most important thing about Steam

If you live in the EU, changing that line would mean breaking the law since everyone has signed the DMCA that prohibits circumventing DRM. No law would prohibit you from using the file you bought and downloaded from GoG. Revoking your right to use them wouldn't hold water with EU consumer protection laws.

So the whole SKG thing was pointless all along.

Not really, because SKG is addressing the case where game makers and publishers remotely disable your games by killing off the servers that make the game function. There's nuance, but SKG argues that this should already not be allowed under the current consumer protection laws either.
