>chad hero does big melee>caster slut does big nuke>healer waifu does group heal>gimmick buffer does buffbeing the optimal play every single turn, if you want to kill enemies quickly, you need to grow a pair and not have a healer out 24/7 so you can actually burn down their stagger meter in a fast time and it meant that despite being a menu based jrpg you had to react to enemy attacks and your current situation way more, esp since you had two different attacking roles that are both needed to clear stagger and each character uses those roles is slightly different ways.
unfortunately they didn't make doing this mandatory, instead its like a devil may cry or something where you can play in the slowest, lamest way possible if you're okay with getting a shitty rank/bad rewards from fights and taking forever so people just didn't engage with the mechanic properly and so square reworked it to be a generic "mash buttons until the boss falls over and then do MORE damage"
TLDR: the mechanic isn't bad, the average jrpg player is
