Half-true. Verso in that conversation is constructing the deceit that he and his family were not already immortal before leaving Lumiere with expedition 0. Verso also lied when he said Clea killed Expeidion 0. Verso and his family knew Aline was the paintress. They fucking lived with her before the fracture.

If you die to Nevrons, your chroma goes to rRenoir. If you die normally, your chroma goes to Aline. rRenoir is trapped under the monolith and can re-enter the painting if killed, so there's literally nothing expeditioners can do to help except be killed by rRenoir so that the people of Lumiere can cherish what time they have left.
