Was FFIX actually the best one?

it's debatable. 7, 9, 10 I enjoyed the most. have not played the most recent one.

FF9 had a number of very unfortunate mechanical fuckups like inability to trigger Trance manually, but it also introduced one of the best passive skill systems in the entire genre, had a great core cast and fantastic Ghibli inspired feel to it, and was possibly the best Guch FF in terms of narrative overall. It's certainly one of the best ones, that's for sure.

The horizontal equipment system which makes it so that there are rarely direct upgrades. Most gear is situational with the passives they provide. The skill gem system is also great and gives lots of customizability like FF7 and FF8 while maintaining the individuality of the characters and their classic FF jobs. One of the biggest problems of 7 and 8 is that no character really stands out at all, they're just blank stat sheets you shove materia/junctions onto.

Still 2. 13-16 might be uninspired to not even FF by any stretch, but somehow they were bearable (was in early teens when I played 13 though so maybe I put up with more shit). The only reason I managed to finish 2 was managing to force myself to because I really wanted to get through all mainline FF. I dreaded continuing to play it and almost didn't want to get up and back to my chair. I understand newer versions might make it more bearable, and replaying it with previous knowledge might do so too, but I really don't see myself wanting to play it again.

It backtracked on graphics, or at least, stylistically. We went from the block heads in FF7 to decently proportioned humans in FF8, then we go to chibis? Really nigga?
The combat was slow and boring, the summons were half assed and weak, the bosses were boring, save for some Kuja fights. The final boss was a literal who, a fucking random guy who stumbled into us at the mall.
The only good thing about it was some story themes, I liked Vivi, the battle theme and melodies of life.

I don't want a remake, FF9 is my favourite game of all time. I know I'm completely blinded by childhood nostalgia and I don't care. I have my perfect game already with the Moguri mod, they keep improving that mod every year while still allowing so many options so it doesn't ruin the original game.
That's all I wanted from Square for so many years, an upscale, 60 fps so it runs smoother, and an option if I wanted to skip random encounters so I can explore the World map at my own pace and I have all that with the Moguri mod.
I do not want voice acting for FF9, not because I don't like voice acting in games, but I played FF9 with no VA so I have in my head what the characters sound like and if I hear them with voices now after 25 years it'll change my perception of those characters and that's the very last thing I want, the worst would be having Zidane with an upbeat American Cali type Voice actor, that would kill me. So please, NO REMAKE!

The only real problem i have with FFXVI is the gameplay. I dont care if it is action, but the general gameplay feels like a mish mash of ideas that dont work.
Example: the game is clearly more DMC-like, juggling enemies and stuff. But then they add a stagger system for NO real reason and you have no real way to interact with that system, unlike FFVIIR.
The combat system feels undercooked. No different weapons, no damage types, no elemental weaknesses, enemy design feels like they just differ in basic attack patterns, dodge is an universal way to avoid damage, no buffing/debuffing, no real magic system. Not even the items are remotely good.
The sidequests, sometimes, are good but JUST because of the story content, not because of the gameplay. They dont add any new mechanic, or a small minigame, or a real new type of special enemy, like FFVIIR. Its just kill normal mobs and talking.

XIII is garbage but if I had to choose between replaying it or XVI, I'd pick XIII. The visuals and music are beautiful, and it does actually get some proper RPG mechanics in the post-game. Though I'd really rather play neither game again. I think what makes XVI stand out as such a bad action game is that its release was sandwiched between SoP and VIIRb that both did the action game elements in much more cohesive, satisfying ways without even sacrificing the RPG elements that XVI's devs said had to be cut out to accommodate DMC gameplay.
I can't remember enough about XV to comment on it, but I'm gonna replay it soon.

Yes, and i would agree, however due to the lack of mechanics the different skill set feels very limited. Example? Shiva. I dont think anyone ever really bothered with Shiva skills except the dodge freeze and diamond dust, thats because you already have similar skills in other eikons. If there were more mechanics involved then the skills would shine.

I really wish certain characters didn't die so soon, that they were more a part of the story, that there were more elements in the game that made it an actual FF game instead of a pure action game like elemantal weaknesses, extensive gearing and loot options, more outfits, inn's, a world map, an airship hell even being able to control in some aspect Mid's ship the Enterprise instead of it being a pure cutscene.
It's too much of a movie in some places and too much of an mmo in other parts.

I never cared for XIII's world enough for the visuals to wow me in any particular fashion, and the music never stuck with me either outside of the battle theme. The combat in XIII is horrendous autobattle bullshit, and I never bothered with postgame because I hated the main story.
At the end of the day what carries me through XVI and not XIII is that I actually liked the characters and wanted to see what they did next. I hated every single party member in XIII, but I genuinely like Clive and Jill.

It's all the cast for me, Vivi of course is the most popular for a reason but it's Steiner, Garnet, Zidane, it's all of them well maybe not Amarant and Quina I could do without those two but whatever they are there.
I see the core party in FF9 will always be Zidane, Vivi, Steiner and Garnet and pretty much always play when I have the option as only them 4 in a party.
