Wild World if you want something close to the GC games. It's basically the original game with new stuff, "sanitized" dialogue and adapted to the technical limitations of the DS (like living in a smaller town with fewer villagers).
Let's Go to the City is just Wild Worlds but at a higher resolution and worse gameplay. The "city" is just a small corridor with buildings that could have been part of the main town without problem, and the sanitized dialogue is more present.
New Leaf is when the main franchise transitioned from comfy town life to chore simulator, but still had enough content available at the beginning to let you chill and take the town's development at a slow pace.
New Horizons is a full town builder simulator that appeals more to people that want to create their own town than to those who want to relax in a comfy place and even feels stressful at times.

With Animal Crossing it's always either the original for single player / local multiplayer, or the newest one for online.

I admit that I didn't play WW as much as the other games. I never owned a DS and only played it when my cousin let me borrow her console during visits, but from what I played it was like a pocket version of the GC game with newer buildings gayer dialogs.

How was it? I played the GC and Wii games until I purchased every house upgrade, the 3DS game until the console broke (I didn't enjoy having to manage the town and build/unlock locations) and barely played the Switch game because starting a town from scratch wasn't fun.

Wild World has the most soul. Then the Gamecube original, then probably New Leaf, but to be honest, New Leaf is when the franchise fell into oblivion for me, and became too "service" and features oriented instead of just keeping it basic while focusing on the villager dialogue and adding more story ideas.

My favorite thing about the DS game is that the non-villagers get "down-days" after a few weeks of play, and on specific days in the year, where they'll tell you more about their past, and it felt like there was a bit more of a story to the game at that point.

In games since New Leaf they just use "down-days" as a facade for presenting new game mechanics. It tutorializes the one thing that used to be actual story-writing in the game.

Either the GCN or Wild World.
Wild World took the GCN and improved some things while getting rid of other things. It felt like the trade offs were even.
Coty Folk was Wild World but not portable and a little less soul. I didn't play it so maybe I am wrong. More content but the city feature took away from the aesthetic imo.
New Leaf was a little less soul than City Folk. I will give credit that New Leaf had some neat things, so I don't think it was bad by any stretch. It just wasn't as good as Wild World.
New Horizons was way too barebones and changed the focus too much on the player. It became a game about 'me' instead of 'us'. The map editor is fantastic. The rest of the new features I didn't like. It became too tedious.

>actually recommending wild world
you people are smoking crack

wild world is beloved exclusively by people who have nostalgia for it as a childhood game. viewed through an objective lens in 2025, it is the worst animal crossing game. yes, worse than city folk, a game that is essentially a port of wild world with better graphics, motion controls, and the worst feature in any animal crossing game (animal tracks). animal crossing is a game about atmosphere, about letting that atmosphere wash away your stress as it shrinks the world down to a little town in the mountains, on the coast, on an island. wild world has no fucking atmosphere. your town in wild world is a flat, barren wasteland that is - for whatever reason - predominately dirt. even emulating it at its native resolution doesn't stop it from looking like shit. it's been 20 years and there are multiple other portable animal crossing games, meaning wild world has little to nothing going for it.

out of the ones OP listed, NL or even NH are preferable to playing barren, shallow WW. NL is good and has a lot of content, but i'm not a huge fan of the aesthetic, the OST, or some of the design decisions (the fucking island). Nintendo's lack of support for NH and the new director's design philosophy are both pretty bad, but it's still a better game than WW for how much customization it offers.

the original game(s, PG or e+) are my favorites.

I wish it looked like that. It looks like soft baby shit made from playdough (without the neat aesthetic of actually being playdough), or maybe almost like a mobile phone game.

Sylvanian families looks amazing.

I don't think you can say its the worse when New Horizons exists. New Leaf is great, but I think Wild World had a little more charm that New Leaf didn't (and I'm not talking with rose tinted glasses). I got sucked into Wild World and I'm sure if I played it today (after getting rid of all the weeds and roaches), then I could easily be sucked into it too. The dirty thing sucks yes and was a complaint even back during release. The trees, houses, flowers, rivers, etc. did help to make it lively. Could it have used more variety in landscaping? Yeah. I don't think it hurts the game in a remarkable way, at least not enough to say New Horizon is a better game than it because of this. The best parts are interacting with the villagers, and New Horizons neutered that so bad I can't believe that got past testing.

Animal tracks is one of those "features" that makes you wonder how it made it past mulitiple developers and into a game that went gold. Even more surprising is that it took multiple games to go away. At the very least there should've been an easier way of grass regrowth then fucking waiting weeks or months for it grow back.
Maybe I'm a little autistic but unironically dirt paths are a dealbreaker for me

NH is a soulless dollhouse, but it's still a dollhouse with more depth than WW. You can easily milk hundreds of hours out of customizing your island, collecting things, and especially designing houses if you bought the DLC. Are the villagers soulless? Yes. Are there missing items and sets? Yes. But if your interest is in interacting with the villagers, you're better off playing the original game.
Anonymous No.714622773 [Report]
>>714622204
I see your point, I agree. Wild World isn't deep, but I kind of like that about it. I'd play it in the evenings for an hour or two, then shut down because I was caught up by then. I personally put most value in the villager interactions, so NH's sin of giving us soulless villagers is too much for me.
>But if your interest is in interacting with the villagers, you're better off playing the original game.
Totally agreed, they got it right in the original. Villagers had more personality, even if they were total assholes sometimes. I felt more attached to them in GCN and WW. Even if the asshole neighbor was moving away I'd be a little sad. NL made them feel a a bit too copy-pasted sometimes, and NH took that to the extreme.

I liked new leaf a lot but it was the beginning of the end. New animal crossing games went way too crazy with the customization and away from socializing with your villages and friends. People did make crazy towns in wild world but it was much more impressive because they had such a limited toolkit (less so when the world editor tools came out + everyone had a flashcart). I miss enjoying my daily checklist of chores for my town and seeing what my villagers were up to, even the dialogue now is so soulless

I wrote all this but everyone in the thread has already said it, I really don't get why Nintendo would do it if nobody seems to like NH other than dumb chicks who make yt vids of their island. Now the geanie is out of the bottle I doubt theyll ever go back to the core of what made the series good, Nintendo is so scared of making any new game that isn't bland and safe

The problem is that Nintendo corporate is calling the shots on a lot of things more than they used to. You can just tell starting with Breath of the Wild that someone in a boardroom said "Hey, Minecraft?" and they started making all their games based loosely around the most popular kids games. BotW has biomes and green grassy fields with sporadic ambiance music and focus on "creativity", and Animal Crossing has farming and collecting more than usual, so you can craft your own slop, and fully customize your island in a "Creative mode". Both this and Zelda now have breakable items and emphasis on stackable consumables.

That's how you know that this shit is partly made in a boardroom before it is given to the devs themselves.
