what's this? a remaster by square-enix? of a beloved SNES game? that doesn't totally suck? that actually brings original creatives back for the remaster? are you fucking SHITTING me?

discuss, if you wish, this not-flawless but very-good port of the greatest Final Fantasy of all time. i'm playing it for the first time right now. i see they're not using the Woolsey translation, curious to see if this will be better. so far, it feels a little more mature.

this is the second instance where they do not bother to check if "L" left-shoulder button is even a real button... it doesn't correlate to the actual mapping which is kind of funny. how did they overlook this?

It sucks. The sprites look worse. The music is worse. They left out animations (like Mog's dance twirl. He just fucking stands there). Just play a rom of the SNES version.

i'm evaluating this in the context of Square-Enix being absolutely shit at ports. for the record, this is the only port i've ever considered playing. all the rest are so obviously badly implemented garbage, i gave them a pass.

it's not perfect, obviously. but i can see the effort. gonna have to emphatically disagree on the music. i think it's both faithful, and a welcome arrangement. similarly the sprites have retained their character despite the upgrade. this is easily the best attempt at improving the sprites i have seen to date.

i've played the ROM so many times, and the Brave New World romhack which is think is a clear upgrade... i really doubt they made this any harder than the original. but it's a nice nostalgia trip.

I think it is the weakest of the PR, doesnt mean it is bad or anything but
1. the music for some songs are way overdone (searching for friends, boss theme)
2. FF6 in general has a more dark shading in its graphics, like it has more shadows and muted colors unlike others, giving it its identity. That shading doesnt exist in PR.

The best, by far, was FFV for me. Too many cool upgrades in music and graphics, and how they added the dark void hole at the end vs Neo exdeath. The music is also beautiful, every single track is better than the OG (well, except Exdeath battle theme which was better in the OG). Lenna theme is just so beautiful and the battle theme got the justice it deserved by adding a beautiful second part to it.

I don't mean to derail your thread about a version of the game I haven't played, but it is my firm belief that Kefka is nothing without Woolsey. His rushed and liberty-taking translation injected personality into a character that was rather flat in the original japanese script.

Well, you thought wrong, because it is harder. In fact i got stuck at the tentacle boss in World of ruin / Figaro. Thats becuse the enemies now use way more special attacks and the ATB is very quick.
There are some other great upgrades as well like knowing what Gau powers do and Cyan got a big Bushido buff as well.

New overworld minimap for the uninitiated... I memorized this so many years ago. It comes in three sizes.

The new WoB - Terras Theme is lovely. Really beautiful. The thing I love about these arrangements, other than being supervised by Uematsu, is they are highly faithful to the originals. There's added polyphony that might have been impossible with the SNES engine.

Thats because the original searching for friends starts really strong at the beginning and it syncs perfectly with the imagery of the airship coming out of the ocean. Its perfect.
The PR version starts really slow and it builds up. Its more like a Distant worlds rendition, music that you hear in an orchesta rather than in a videogame.

The pixel remasters are pretty nice. They play extremely well, keep a fairly consistent look between the games, the music's fantastic, and they un-fucked the awful font so it's somewhat less awful now. They're kinda too expensive and yet they're still not as outrageous as the fucking Final Fantasy Tactics remaster

I think this is something that started to happen when games got voice acting. I noticed this with a lot of older games where the music was needed to convey emotions for the scene. but now the rely on voice acting with varying degrees of success.

I don't get hung up on shit like font, translation or localizing, because idgaf about narrative/ writing in games. imo arcade pacman has the appropriate amount of "plot" and "scenes" any game should have
That said, I had a lot of fun with all of them that I played. I got distracted mid-ff5, but plan to finish and play through 6 as well. My favorites are 3 and 5, but I just fuckin love job/ class based combat. Enough so that I even occasionally replay ffx-2 because the dressphere grid is essentially the same thing

Part of the remasters was updating the game engine/controls to run on mobile without an on screen gamepad overlay. That necessitated redoing the menus/interface at least. The first time they did it FF mobile it was an abomination. Which the Pixel Remasters they wanted to redo things in the style of the originals but without all of the exact sprite restrictions, and they did a pretty good job. If you want the uncut originals you can of course just emulate them.

I'm the OP. I looked up Searching for Friends. I'd say the major change that I appreciate the most is variety. There's more going on, especially in the 2nd half. Sounds like film music honestly, which I love. The electric bass is a little subdued. The added horns and timpani though... fantastic.

>they wanted to redo things in the style of the originals
Not exactly. Primarily the devs wanted to update the first four games to the style of FF5. That's why a lot of graphics, particularly field sprites, have a FF5 feel to them.

it's even worse when juxtaposed with those shitty upscales they did on the world tiles... it just looks horrible.
Why I've always avoided the ports. Well, that and not having a GBA, lol.

sure, i've heard about the infinite dungeon and stuff. doesn't sound terribly compelling.
if it had a new track by Uematsu or something, then I would be excited. The main reason I got excited about PR is when I heard Uematsu was supervising/scoring the remake. I've waited for this for like 30 years...

the extra content is just extra content, none of it really amounts to much. maybe FF4 links to the mobile sequels they did? and not FF but Chrono Trigger's extra content in the DS version does link back to Cross and Radical Dreamers.

It really is great. So many things about it are great... I think the 30 level cap is way too brutal, but like, the first time you step into Mystic Forest and get into a battle.. AND THE MUSIC KEEPS PLAYING, oh my god. So much better.
One of these days I WILL beat it, but I'm going to need a guide to get past Atma.

4 looks better on pr
1 looks better on ps1
But the differences aren't enough to ruin the experience or anything

4's Lunar Dungeon doesn't link to The After Years, but TAY did take the general idea of Kain's scenario and retooled it to insert into the plot.

you think this is different? they somehow made the most choppy looking 2D game i've ever played with this "remaster" because they all the animations don't line up at 60fps

The second Atma in Kefka's tower? Obviously a creation by Kefka. Either he remade Atma or resurrected the original from the FC.

I and II already had FFV style remakes and III had one killed in development, PR very much rewinds battle sprite appearance towards the original designs compared to those. Even finally brought back the taller proportioned advanced jobs in FF1.

You mean the WonderSwan style remakes? Those absolutely are not FF5 styled. Those were very much their own unique style. But anyway, don't take my word for it:
>Naofumi: When it came to making FF Pixel Remaster, we basically wanted to remaster everything from FINAL FANTASY I to FINAL FANTASY V to bring the quality up to the same standard as FINAL FANTASY V, and leave FINAL FANTASY VI as is.
https://www.square-enix-games.com/en_EU/news/final-fantasy-pixel-remaster-famitsu-interview
They even used V's font as the basis for the pixel style font introduced in the console versions. V was their target.

Thing is however that mixing NES sprite designs with GBA battle backgrounds and how they modified the battle screen placement for 16:9 does result in dumb shit.

>>714644258
Yet most of that work to "bring it up to the same quality standard as FFV" for I and II consisted of assets ported from the WSC versions. If they just wanted to "bring up the standard" they also could have just used the FFVI style Record Keeper party sprites considering that's where a lot of the enemy sprites came from anyways.

i know the biggest obstacle to making a sequel or a remake of FFVI, which has been talked about for nearly 3 decades, what legal shit from Nintendo. I don't know how that got resolved so they could make the PSX versions.
