Same reason anyone cares about any console: the games. Nintendo always brings the goods. PlayStation had the quantity but time has shown all anybody gives a shit about are the cream of the crop and the N64 was so slouch in that regard.

Nobody knew how to make a 3D game in that era. Most of this era was shitty tank controls, shitty FPS controls, the only games fondly looked upon besides the big 3 (SM64, OoT and MGS1) are 2D or racing games.

64 was more polished but Playstation one had literally everything. I even could play some of the Japanese region demos with the Playstation underground subscription where they'd send you like 2 or 3 disc's full of demos and videos and shit (instead of a magazine )
