I actually think he did a really good job of playing big boss. The problem with the game was that he only actually fucking acted like big boss in some tapes at the end. I felt the same with death stranding when I got to the end and went "Wait you can actually get these guys to fucking act? Why didn't you do that way sooner?" Is this just how kojimbo saves money on all those hollywood VAs, by letting them phone it way the fuck in except for the very end?

to send a message, Hayter and the original Metal gear cast was pretty public that Kojima wanted Hollywood stars to replace them and although Hayter wanted to collab more to grow Metal Gear, Kojima had Hollywood dreams.

Kojima needed to get his foot in the door in hollywood, so shitcanning the VO for the protag in favour of a hollywood star was the most plausible way he could get Konami to satisfy his hollywood fetish.
As with all his MGS games where anything can be explained with "nanomachines", any question you have about Hideo can be explained away using "hollywood", he's literally that fucking simple-minded. He's a nasty piece of filth for using and abusing funds just to creep his way around into more and more prominent stars and staff, using company money to buy friendships.

Around the time of the recasting fiasco, Debi Mae West got asked about it and revealed something that wasn't publicly known at the time and barely ever gets mentioned anywhere - Konami actually attempted to recast Hayter for MGS2 and only brought him back because they couldn't find anyone suitable. Why did they do this? Hayter somehow found out that Akio Otsuka earned more than he did for MGS1 and he dug his heels in over wanting a significant pay rise.

Plus we found out a few years ago that Kojima actually tried getting Kurt Russell for MGS3.
