I don't understand why. Don't hate Mario but there's nothing inherently engaging about him. He's an overweight Italian stereotype. His voice is annoying long term to listen to. And his personality about rescuing a bitch who ultimately rejects him makes him look lame.

Sonic has games, many cartoons, some anime, comics, and recently a series of theatrical movies that are still ongoing. So Sonic has remained continuous naturally younger generations will get attached. And it helps Sonic that he's meant to be stylish and cool. This is why whenever they try to reboot Pac Man he ends up failing, he looks like a simple emoji BEFORE emojis existed.

Pac-Man is probably the most iconic of them all. Just imitating the wakawakawaka sound and everyone recognizes it. But I'm genuinely impressed that Nintendo managed to build this entire cohesive world for Mario, made of seemingly random ideas, while other arcade icons never really managed. I think Pac-Man is more iconic but not necessarily as a character, just that as the thing you play as in the original game.
