the games development was fucked up with multiple retoolings about key things like "who the main character and final villian are", square was in the process of going fucking bankrupt and merging with enix to stay open, and developing for brand new ps2 hardware with an action rpg forumla different from the kind of games square was making on the ps1 and all of the legal bullshit dealing with disney involves to ensure their IP is presented in the exact way they like

KH1 magic felt unique and special, but I don't think 2's is strictly bad, especially powered up with forms. I don't want to talk about 3. RE:COM and the other command deck games actually have the best magic system.

It's too exploitable for my tastes. Like you get to a point where it's almost impossible to not have a Cure ready to go by the time you need it because it's easy to get the required MP.

KH1 is awesome because you can spam Fire and then hit the enemy back to recover magic
KH2 and 3 you run out of MP and then you just wait it out
Other games use command decks so you wait on timers there
Sadly the games further down got balanced based on Cure being broken in KH1 so KH2/3 magic suffers that you want to keep 1mp for Cure, and command decks suffer that you have to pick your spells so you'll always pick the best choices in your opinion.

Release a proper port for the Switch 2 and I'll buy it for the 4th time, your move Squeenix

I find it the opposite. in KH1 when I ran out of magic, hitting enemies did basically nothing to earn MP so it was a very slow process to gain it back, thus I never used magic.

in KH2 you can always gain your magic back and you can speed up MP recharge in many ways, hitting enemies, collecting mp, mp rage, ect. So I used magic WAAAY more and found it very fun.
