Why is this a mechanic? You make a mage character then you find your first mage armor, only copy or it for 35+ hours probably, and it's locked behind picking 1 of the 2 sexes at the start. Why? If they only modelled the dress version, just let men wear dresses for fucks stake.
It's not like this is an informed decision you'll be making since you can't know what armors are for what sex at the start

I want to wear the armor that, according to the item description, comes with multiple pet maggots and insects built in.

At least there is that cleric robes set too for light equip load, but it's no real replacement for maggot- and insect filled armor.

Just impose a system wherein wearing the wrong sex armour is penalised somehow, the clothing is too small and it fucks up your movement and roll speed or the armour is too big and it does chip damage when it clangs around too hard

Playing as a female should have no gameplay advantages over playing as a male because male is the superiour gender.
