No, it allows you to consider both sides of the argument. It's basically a filter for critical thought. If you pick Maelle, you allow yourself to be emotionally manipulated by a teenager.

Verso's ending isn't good either. Clea walking off shows there's still tension between her and the rest of the family. It just shows that they MIGHT be able to heal and move on from Verso's death.

So, why did Aline paint her "fake" daughter as she was after the fire incident?

If the point of escaping into the canvas was to get away from her grief and pretend nothing happened with her "fake" family, it doesn't make sense she would paint canvas Alicia as a constant reminder of her daughters biggest fuck up.

Aline wasn't right in her mind, she wanted to acknowledge the fire, but not the event of Verso's death.
Thus, painted Alicia. She herself agrees she loves her daughter btw, but grief hit her super hard.

Aline had it out for Alicia after the fire. That's why, when she painted Renoir, Verso and Alicia in the Canvas, she let Verso be as she remembered him, unblemished. She could pretend that the fire only affected Alicia, as a way to also punish her in some way, since Aline blamed her to some degree for Verso's death.

Because Aline REALLY hates Alicia. She literally blames her for everything that happened and even during her boss fight she essentially goes "yeah, it should've been you who died, you useless cunt". So she painted Alicia as this disfigured, mute caricature out of spite.
That's why I think Verso's ending is bullshit. Throwing Alicia back into this pathological family can only end in a disaster.

That's the Disney bullshit part. This family's so toxic and dysfunctional I simply don't see them getting back together. Aline still blames Alicia, Clea is still a sociopath, Alicia is still crippled and traumatized and Renoir hasn't solved shit in his crusade to fix the painting. The game just assumed they worked it all out offscreen. Cool.
Families broke for less severe reasons.

That family is responsible for creating immense amount of pointless suffering for no reason other than their own entertainment or personal bullshit.
Those people are completely unworthy of demiurge powers that they possess, and the only good ending is them being physically eliminated. Maelle ending just makes it more likely.

The game tells us that, but nothing in the narrative shows us that they actually care for one another one bit. If anything, the Dessendres are shown as absolutely awful people, and were implied to be that way even before the fire.

Your first mistake is giving Aline the benefit of the doubt. Aline is a narcissist and you can tell just how full of herself she is by seeing the subtle psychotic smile she has when she returns to the canvas in the final battle or how she speaks to her husband.
>why did Aline paint her "fake" daughter as she was after the fire incident?
Nothing is more unhinged and cruel than a narcissist's revenge. Aline loved Verso more than Alicia because Verso was her golden child. Aline hates Alicia because she wasted her golden child's life with her survival. As punishment she has to suffer. She gets undeserved catharsis each time she looks at pAlice.

No? Aline, by all accounts and what's shown, was a loving mother who, despite being a paintress, was ok with her kids doing whatever they wanted.
Same as Clea, who, despite being more goals driven, spent a ton of time with Verso in the canvas when they were kids.

Verso deserves all of it for being a deceiver and a manipulator though.
One of many downsides of destroy the canvas ending is that this piece of shit gets to have his way instead of paying for his crimes.

Even putting aside the fate of the painted characters (who all desire or accept it except Lune) the Verso ending is happy only in the sense that it prevents two members of the real family from an heroing but it isn't exactly saccharine fueled.

The game isn't really subtle about Verso being correct. You're blasted with this when confronting the painting.

notice how literally no one talks about Metaphor Refantazio's dogshit story. Horizontal slit eyes need to take a hard lesson here. Remove 90% of your convoluted exposition cutscenes and your players will fill in the blanks themselves with far better lore. And they'll want to talk about it for much longer.

Metaphor is fine, it's us that have outgrown those types of games. Although to be fair I'm not sure the studio knew exactly what they wanted. It kind of feels like they were trying to make the game for people who grew up with the persona games (or P5) but Metaphor is still just basically the same juvenile / YA story and storytelling, so it doesn't really work anymore for people outside that age group. But if you are in that age group I imagine it's about as engaging as the Persona games were for me.
