I wanna feel like a cool, gritty detective rooting through the seedy underbelly of a city to solve heinous crimes

or even just individual levels/missions/quests of otherwise non-detective games

I don't think any of the crimes in LA noire are that dark or gritty

he isn't cool, he does no detective work, and there is no seedy underbelly; only copypasted shadow monsters

The True Detective series features occult elements. So the fact that there's something supernatural isn't a problem for me at all. But I would still recommend playing Alan Wake 2, because it's graphically more beautiful.

No One wants to Die has you solving shit. Dunno if I'd call the place a seedy underbelly though, what with the premise being a society that's effectively solved for immortality.

Shadows of Doubt but only if you have a tolerance for pretty severe jank at times.

unfortunately there just aren't many games that do that even as ever present as it is in tv and fiction. point and click adventure games suffered a premature death and in the genre's heyday it was overwhelmingly goofy cornball antics.

Was going to suggest Shadows of Doubt too. It's got potential but the way it's been designed, sometimes it's impossible to solve some crimes.

The Police Quest point and click adventure games gradually get grittier and grittier with every entry, finally hitting its peak with Police Quest 4 Open Season. It's by far the worst of the original series (before it became SWAT) but it's okay.

The whole point of Chinatown is that Jake has solved the crime(s), it's just the perps are too powerful to ever be charged for what they've done.
Actually kind of similar ending in True Detective Season 1. They've done all they can, but they know there's way more going on and they have to live with that for the rest of their days.

baby, you already know the answer

I literally applied for the Federal Police after playing it and i got rejected and i pretty much drank for a week straight because their next rounds of applicants aren't enlisted until 2027 and the State Police is too scary to me, just last week i heard about a cop getting blasted over an eviction notice. I need to look into better pathways into the police force

Then obviously didn't play it because there are ton of fucked up cases like the black dhalia killer
