99.99% of posters here don't even know how to utilise a metabuild in the videogame they play.
Why?
Because you're not on high enough level of skill to even need meta.

The problem is competition and self-expression are at odds with one another. Competition always results in a race to the bottom where anything besides meta gets sidelined. And it's not even just about what builds and strategies are optimal, it's about an entire way of looking at games. It's why the idea of an MMORPG is actually oxymoronic, because the very act of roleplaying ends up getting sidelined when your human brain is fundamentally encouraged to focus entirely on optimal strategy.

It's true in MMORPGs, it's true in souls games. It's true in strategy games with multiplayer options like paradox grand strategy, and so on.

Sure, there's a range. The more serious the multiplayer aspect is, the worse the effect is going to be. And again, it's not even just about build meta. Nobody in the multiplayer is even going to allow you to, you know, roleplay, during a raid. It's a fundamental contradiction.

Take a game like skyrim. It's not a sweaty tryhard game BECAUSE it's singleplayer. People take their time, do things based on RPing rather than strictly what's the most optimal. Now imagine if skyrim had multiplayer functionality. All of that would go out the window. Upon spawning in the game it'd turn into a total race to the bottom where players start running around, ignoring all the coziness/roleplaying/etc in order to farm experience, powerlevel, race across the map to shotgun for the most OP items, etc. That's the fundamental issue I take with multiplayer.

Hahaha I love to watch Roleplay streamers and they get absolutely dumpstered by people that live and breathe the mechanics of the game. I watch people for their personality not their ability to shoot good. That is not a personality.

I can't tell how many times this fucked my fun with raiding the past. Maybe a dozen guilds I've joined disbanded because of one of more of the following reasons:

I was so hyped when the DLC added perfume weapons. I really tried to make them work, because it could've meant finally being able to do a true perfumer build. But they just absolutely fucking suck. Piss-poor damage. No stagger. They all have completely different stat distributions, which is cool if the idea is to make it so there's a perfume bottle that can be used on every build, but sucks if you're trying to do a perfumer build that uses a variety of perfumes.

You use to be able to place an unlimited number of wards in LoL. When it was clear my team was going to lose I use to sell all my gear and buy tears but my friend and I thought of a better way to run it down mid. Selling all your gear to buy wards and placing all those wards in a swastika formation in your own base. The enemy team always said "What the fuck?" When they finally finished this 40 minute game and invaded our base.
