Honestly, it fits the character. Sam spends most of the game avoiding human contact like it's radioactive, and his emotional connections are way more important than any physical ones. Kojima probably thought "what if Solid Snake, but with trauma and a BB pod," and ran with it. Plus, it’s not like the game ever leaned into romance anyway-man's too busy schlepping packages and hugging holograms to bone.
