Did Kojima actually write way less of the actual scripts of all these games than we thought, and is he actually just a "story/synopsis writer"? and not an author?

As I see it he's basically a "Lead Writer" and not "THE writer", with just as much character development and plotting done by his colleagues. For other video game franchises it's common to have a writer who tells someone what a story must contain, where it starts, where it ends, and what it needs to highlight. Then another writer thinks about all of the actual details and writes the whole script for it.

Is Kojima, in reality, just that? Has he not actually written a lot of the words that are (translated) heard in the games that he has "written by" credits on?

This comes up a bunch of times.

1. The plots are anime tier bullshit and seem to mostly reflect the idiosyncratically of a single nerdy Japanese male.

2. The plots are frankly too god damn stupid to be a committee of people.

3. It's not like an RPG or an open world game which is so massive there's a team of creators who make little individual set pieces. FF7 for instance had a few lead writers, but a huge amount of sub-scenarios were written by like 9 people (who also overlapped with the writers).

4. Fukushima and Kojima explained their writing process in old magazine interviews. Fukushima helps with overall scenario, and specifically is tasked with writing CODEC dialogue under Kojima's supervision.

If you noticed a remarkable drop in the charm of CODEC scenes in 4, it's because Fukushima left and only worked on 1-3.

5. Kojima writes the entire main scenario dialogue himself.
