Despite everything, I still think this is the best Mario Kart game.
It just feels good to play. It's fun to drive. It's Mario 64 style. There's rails and tricks and it's Tony Hawk. I just wish the races weren't decided by who held the best items by the end.

remind me about this game in 2 years when they add meaningful content to the open world, flesh out the intermission tracks with event modifiers and apologize for their lazy filler roster.

the thing about 7 and 8 is that they, unlike the really great mario karts like Double Dash, Wii, and DS, don't really have a central gameplay conceit. You're not *doing* anything other than driving. In Double Dash and DS you're snaking and in Double Dash you're managing your special items, and in Wii you're doing wheelies and turning really sharp and it's fun. World has something similar with the tricks and rails and wallriding, you're usually *doing something* or at least planning something while you're driving. In 7 and 8 you mostly just drive. It makes them forgettable. Also 8DX's massive tracklist is kinda tarnished by the fact that the booster course levels look like mobile game dogshit.

I dunno where my stance is on the openworld. On the one hand I played it for hours on end having a lot of fun on the other hand I'm at 200 out of 400 now and having too search for them made me accept I will never do all of them and thats lame, but on the OTHER side of my retarded coin, finding a mission now fires my dopamine to a lovely degree, way more then "setting marker, going there, do mission and repeat" other games in the genre do.

I get people dislike it, but its not bad, just a taste thing.

8's gimmick was the anti gravity but it amounted to nothing special. The lack that stuff made the game more accessible and you focus on the little things like using mini turbos to get shortcuts. I agree with you on the poor quality of the assets for most of the DLC courses.

You guys don't get it. It wasn't a choice between getting Goomba or Diddy Kong, it was Goomba or nothing. These racers are playable because they were created as part of the Kamek item. Later in development, they decided that they might as well make them selectable from the menu since they already made all the animations. And the Kamek item only exists in the first place because all of the enemies you turn into were already modeled to be used as environmental hazards. This is why they don't have costumes. As playable characters, they were a last minute additions that cost literally 0 development time. If you're offended by their presence and wish the roster was smaller, I guess I understand. But all this complaining carries the undertone that you believe you were robbed of something. You weren't.

This is correct. The consistent response to MKW has been universal praise for Knockout Tour. This is effectively main mode. The entire game was developed around it, a tremendous amount of work was put into making it popular. And it paid off, because it's overwhelmingly more popular.
This highlights a clear divide between the Mario Kart "competitive community" and the rest of the playerbase. All they want to do is race on MKW's 30 standard tracks. They completely reject the *200* other tracks included in the game, which the majority of players are actually racing on exclusively.
