What're the reasons that caused Soulsborne games to be overwhelmingly relevant and successful in the Action RPG genre, and what did other series lack to establish themselves that Fromsoftware figured out?

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were a breath of fresh air considering 7th gen was an enormous piece of shit. They felt like actual videogames, when other shit was becoming cinematic, automated, casualized slop.

People were just happy to see an action game without long ass QTEs every time they had to kill an enemy.

They're very accessible with extremely basic movesets and not much real mechanical depth.
People enjoy going around and exploring the stages, people don't want (or, more importantly, expect) much more than that from FROM

>other series lack
More like people expect a lot more from other series.
Compare mechanical complexity in DD2 to say DS3 or ER. DD2 has -way- more stuff going on, punishes newbies way harder (Souls fags were crying about the weight system), good gameplay takes effort and investment.
People still found it disappointing because the expectation is a lot higher.

FROM is just Japanese Treyarch and Souls is their COD. Slop more in front of FROMfags and they'll but it so long as it's similar enough.

Dragon's Dogma 2 has it worse
>DD2 has -way- more stuff going on
Not really

Lol, they're fine games retard. You go into this spheal about lacking mechanical depth - but in comparison to what, faggot? You have a fuckton of build variety in those games to play around with. I see your WRPG slop and those don't look particularly deep either lmao, meanwhile - they don't require any skill compared to souls.

You call them slop but there haven't even nearly been as many Souls games compared to your yearly shit you compare it to.

The expectation for DD2 was that the game would be finished this time. Playing warrior was great but the overall product was at best a lateral movement from DD1. Capcom has twice fumbled this IP and deserves every ounce of hate they get.

Souls have the simplest combat in ARPG. So everyone can play it. You can't expect people to play anything more complex than League of Legend.

Tell us about all those more complex games in the same genre bro.

This thread just shows how insecure Dragon'a Dogma Cucks are. The only metric they have about how to claim their game is better is "more complex" combat. It's certainly fun in that series don't get me wrong, but it's not exactly a high branch either. Meanwhile they ignore how both DD1 and 2 are practically half of a complete game, and are like.. 15 hours each? Lol

Souls games have an extremely tight game design that always keeps players on their toes. Rarely you are fighting against impossible odds or joke enemies

Dragon's Dogma for example, the whole system feels like it can be gamed very easily with some vocation skills and a lot of enemies aren't a threat

Dark Souls especially cares about and values a lot the way the game design and combat are structured. Why does Dark Souls have limited lock on range, numbered spells and you can't move and fire allows while moving like in Dragon's Dogma, because they couldn't do it? No, they simply realized the game must impose such limitations to work in the framework of the whole game.

It was a very focused and well studied project, its design didn't come out of nowhere by making a game directly off a vertical slice.

There's just not that many ARPG devs out there who care about making good combat. Dragon's Dogma could have been an actual competitor if either game was finished but Capcom simply wasn't willing to put the budget in for it.

There must be more to it than that
