What's so hard about using this gameplay but in an open world? Its only problem was cramped dull cave levels and that was the fault of PS1 hardware

I agree. We've reached the limit of what Blaster Master can be in 2D. I'd love a tank you can drive around a 3D world, and then run inside the caves to fight mutants on foot with your crazy overpowered blaster.
