Why did ray tracing fail?

People don't care about slightly improved graphics over fun game.

Cards still aren't ready for it so they have to heavily approximate it to maintain anything resembling a playable framerate. We're still at least one console generation away from real-time ray tracing replacing standard lighting pipelines, and until then it's just eye candy.

Why the hell would you play at 50fps for this instead of disabling it and playing at 60?

It was always a meme to make money for ai research. Tvs and screens are the bottle neck when it comes to gpu.

You're too hopeful, unless there's some groundbreaking physics-breaking discovery to make those graphics cards it would be at least two more generations.

How did ray tracing fail? More and more devs are making games with ray tracing as the default option, AMD's previously "we only do raster, RT is a meme" cards have now gone the full RT route with AI upscaling to run it, etc. Is it failing because you can't run it?

Fail? By this time next year I expect all games to ONLY have ray tracing lighting by default like the new doom
It is absolutely over for poorfags
But I mean, why would you want to play new vidya in the first place LMAO

It didn't, you can't even turn it off without mods in ue5 games
>>714690108
More than that, the path tracing in cyberpunk will halve your framerate even on ada and blackwell. With dlss quality you need like a 3090 or 4070 to do 1080p

We still have games releasing cross-platform with PS4, anon. Like Yakuza games for example

If you didn't play cyberpunk with the path tracing, you didn't really play it.

Bad example, yakuza games are on a proprietary engine that doesn't do ray tracing in the first place. Outlier. The future of AAA (is yakuza even AAA?) is homogenized development pipelines and unreal jeets using raytracing by default because technically it is the easiest way to do lighting.
The guys at COD are actually doing some black magic though because the new black ops 7 is still coming to ps4 lol

because broadly the performance cost isnt worth the relatively minor visual "upgrade" and its arguable that its an upgrade at all.

for instance, i firmly believe that the non-RT version of Metro Exodus looks way better than the RT enhanced version. in in that game, the RT doesn't even have that much of a performance hit.

kind of a "why play an ace when a 2 will do" situation.

why do you believe that?

Nvidia has successfully gaslit the entire planet that we need raytracing when all they are doing is showing examples where you have completely different tonemapping, bullshit that could be done without it or PBR textures on an ancient ass game.

i watched a video today about this that was pretty good. one of the reasons that i hadn't thought of before is that modern games already had decent lighting solutions so RT didn't give that much of a noticeable difference for the performance cost compared to implementing it on quake or minecraft.

Because the average PC gamer is no longer a smart white man with tech skills and a disposable income who leads the charge, but a brown third worlder with a GTX1650 still playing DOTA2 all day and whining about how modern graphics suck.

Because of the performance impact. RT is the future, no way around it, but not until devs manage to optimize it.

There are no further optimizations devs can make to raytracing. Cyberpunk and Doom Dark Ages are perfect examples of raytracing being as well optimized as currently possible, they're still heavy to run and make people angry.
The "optimization" that needs to happen is a manufacturing breakthrough or a fundamental change to how raytracing is done on the GPU's hardware.

Too much cost for not much visual gain. It was a trick to let devs not work on lighting, so they could cut costs and work on the cash shop and battle pass, instead.

Changing the gamma or brightness or trying to enable screenspace hacks through Reshade will never produce real RT.

The first game that i really noticed RT was in DD2. Caves were actually pitch black dark, adventuring at night was actually dark and a lantern didn't help much. It was pretty to close to reality where a lit candle in a dark room isn't doing that much.

CP2077 as a whole is just one massive showcase of incompetence and laziness.

Pic related is a 6 years old PS4 game, running without ray tracing. It looks way better, all thanks to superior, solid art directing and cinematography.
