Why do JRPGs love to make their protagonists "chosen ones" after the fact, long past the point where it makes any difference? I don't mind chosen one stories that are actually built around it, but I do have a problem when it's tacked onto stories that were doing fine without it. Usually it amounts to "you're going to beat the bad guy and save the world", which they were already going to do anyway because they're the protagonist of the story. All this does is turn the plot armor and luck that comes with being a main character into a literal in-universe thing. At best, it changes nothing, at worst it devalues the story's themes.

Because it's an excuse for hacky writing.
