It’s about storytelling, about creating the sense that you’re in a place and that events are really happening around you in first person without ever breaking the immersion. Half-Life’s innovation and influence was such that now those things aren’t even though of as part of "story", they’re taken for granted as part of a game’s production values. At the time, it was revolutionary, I guess, I wasn’t born yet.

Exactly this. People underestimate just how ahead of its time HL1 was in terms of environmental storytelling. It wasn’t just cutscenes or text logs-you walked through the aftermath, saw the chaos unfold around you organically. HL2 just evolved that idea with better tech and NPC interactions. It's not about Gordon having a voice or a big narrative dump-it’s how the world tells the story around you in real time. That’s the whole damn point.
