In the "good" timeline, we got a direct sequel to this game.

TP was absolute trash, and there was nothing to continue from. Soulless, rushed over-correction attempt, that plagued an entire generation.

SS was a massive upgrade compared to TP's mess.

good timeline
>within the first year of Gamecube we get a disc with Ocarina of Time, Master Quest, Majora's mask, and a new game using the engine but with Gamecube hardware power
>the next new game is Twilight Princess coming out years later
>Wind Waker comes exclusively to Wii on launch day lots of waggle and motion controls + fishing, graphics way better
>Twilight Princess 2 comes to Wii U on launch day

>SS was a massive upgrade compared to TP's mess.

I don't think the general fanbase agrees with that considering how controversial SS was for multiple reasons. It's barren overworld, uncomfortable and inconsistent controls, plot points which shifted around the lore of the franchsie, etc.

In my perfect timeline phantom hourglass and spirit tracks came out as fully 3d games in the wii and wii u and we got twilight princess 2 and 3 on switch and a link's awakening remake and a massively overhauled version of skyward sword on the DS

Incorrect.
The game has some of the best dungeons, characters, OST and writing.

I played SS for the first time a few years ago (lol WiiU) and it was okay. I liked it because I didn't have to use motion controls but I can see why people didn't like it (reusing settings, weird story, the forest level lacked aura, etc)

The vibe and aesthetic of this game is what Zelda should have pushed towards. OOT and MM are still the best Zelda games. I hate the modern Zelda games as they are full of cringey anime weeb bullshit.

TP quite desperately needed a sequel game in the vein of Majora's Mask when it aped Ocarina of Time so hard it even ended with Midna vanishing for basically no reason

The real problem is that they dropped the gimmick/main theme. As long as 3D zelda has a main gimmick like music, masks, wolf link, trains, sailing, sky world, it feels like a unique entry. Open world is not a theme, neither is gmod.

Unfortunately, Zelda is always changing its aesthetic. Also aren't the TP incarnations of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf still considering the definitive versions that Nintendo still uses?

As far as marketable plushie versions go it seems to have largely settled on
>Link - TP, BOTW (TP moreso despite how "hard" they push the BOTW blue look, the green tunic is still the one they go to for marketing material)
>Zelda - ALTTP/ALBW/EoW design with the circlet
>Ganondorf - OoT and TP somewhat interchangeably, notably Super Smash Bros. chose the OoT design to go back to and TOTK's design resembles Wind Waker's most strongly both in face and clothing

Why did they scrap the magic system in this game? I thought that was a nifty implementation of Link's connection to the three goddesses in the N64 era.

It seems like they scrapped the magic system at the last minute, the item pick-up for the Gale Boomerang still talks about a magic charge for the wind effect that doesn't exist anymore. I'm guessing they just ran out of time and dev resources, and what they had left over (Gale Boomerang, spin attacks, Magic Armor) didn't really warrant a full magic system. For that matter the N64 games struggled to find uses for magic sometimes too, all magic items except Din's Fire and Light Arrows are completely optional (even the Lens of Truth just makes things easier more than it's a hard necessity), while in Majora's Mask goron rolling is gonna be the thing you use magic on in 99% of scenarios

Let’s be real here. Most late zillenials and younger (1997-now) see TP as on par with Ocarina. They understand that pound for pound TP is just as if not more well designed for a grand Zelda adventure. This game’s reputation is only going to get better with time.

It's funny how the internet broke down with that score, but 20 years later it was generous if anything.
