five nights at freddy's 1 is legitimately one of the best horror games of all time
the rest of the series is inferior in pretty much every way, and that's without bringing up how it turned a simple story into a total unintelligible mess

It's pretty good in a vacuum, but it don't think it's quite "one of the best horror games of all time"-tier, objectively speaking.
Maybe top 50 somewhere. There are just a ton of really great horror games.

Anyway, I guess I'm considered weird and prefer 3 aesthetic-wise, even if it's definitely the very weakest gameplay-wise.

gameplay wise it's just a wind up box simulator where you occasionally take breaks to put on a mask, the entire camera mechanic is fully useless

2 is easily the worst game in the series

1 is scariest in the early nights where you don't know the late night "keep checking everything" meta and have moments where it's just a void of time where you have no information and could be seconds from death
2 escalates the gameplay by forcing you keep doing shit literally 24/7 thanks to the music box, it's too hectic to be genuinely scary

Sister Location is the franchise's "jumping the shark" point. It's the entry that canonized the stupid dead kid immortality juice bullshit from the books and made mysterious serial killer "Purple Guy" into Freddy's co-owner genius roboticist and professional child scientist William Afton, father of the protagonist Michael Afton who also turned out to be the protagonist of 1 3 and 4 because fuck you. It also has some of the most sci-fi shit in the series while also being set rather early in the timeline.
So, safe to say, it's definitely one of the more contentious entries.

I can't take modern fnaf games or mascot horror in general seriously (not that it deserves to be in the first place) But something that Scott did really well in the first and third games IMO is that the mascots themselves weren't the actual creepy or scary part, but the fact there were things hiding in them pretending to be mascots.
But I guess creativity is not a priority when your main target audience are small children and trying to sell toys/a brand.
