Why does it look better than 99% of games released today?

Why don't more devs pursue appealing art designs that are less expensive while looking better and aging like fine wine over expensive photorealism?

I don't know, however, Betilla's ass freckles.

Rayman Origins and especially Legends are among the games with the best graphics ever made in the entire industry.
People just don't notice because they take 2D for granted.
