Why did Capcom fail to establish a Souls competitor? I remember Deep Down before and then Dragon's Dogma 2 were being compared respectively to Dark Souls 2 and Elden Ring and then one of them was canned and the other underfunded.

You would think a studio as big as Capcom would try to establish themselves in such a popular genre more

Dragons Dogma 2 has literally no content.
A shame really. I could look over the awful performance.

They already did the combat better which is all that matters in these games.

DD2 has less content. censored out the ass.
The RE engine cant make open world games without it shitting itself.

Crapcom should have made it in a new engine and put in more content and had it uncensored and let you create and flirt with lolis.

>play a fromsoft game
>poise feels good
>damage/armor formulas feel good
>upgrading feels good
>being overgeared feels good
>being undergeared feels good
>enemies are engaging and you need to respond to bosses adequately
>you can easily change your gameplay style into something that matches your stats whenever you want even despite the upgrade system. put some upgrades into a weapon you wanna try, infuse something, get a feel of it at +5 if youre stingy, figure out something interesting for your offhand, put on different rings

>play dragons dogma
>poise is bland and binary
>flat defense system is dogshit
>upgrading is awkward and can dart your power exageratedly, or it can also do zero difference (see below)
>being overgeared makes the game stale because almost all of its challenging content is entirely held up by retarded flat defense making you deal 0 damage if you wanna use most of your attacks
>being undergeared in BBI is just dogshit gameplay because now you need to spam the burst damage move over and over against an anemic enemy that doesnt actually threaten you for ages, either that or use periapts (which just replaces it with the above)
>the gap between being overgeared and undergeared is way too low
>most enemies are insanely anemic and never placed in a spot that actually fuck you, bosses can effortlessly be backpedaled unless its a stat check rape like double dire drakes
>Wanna just get a moderate deviation from usual fighter gameplay? well tough shit, no weapons with different movesets or fancy shit for you to try out, you will have to migrate all the way to assassin or mystic knight for it and make sure all its gear is ready to get past the 0 damage hell. And if they depend on augments of other vocations to not feel like shit then add even more chore to the pile

You forgot the musou tier skills that completely wipe the floor with most enemies working off a regenerating infinite stamina bar and spellcasting designed around standing still while the enemy is distracted

this is what differentiates fromslop from the rest of the AAA devs or souls copycats when going for deliberate melee combat
they just know how to make the basic features feel good and be capable of providing pleasant gameplay at any stage, the stuff that isnt surface level but still basic and important like poise, damage calculations, hit feedback etc are just outright better. DD has some great highs if youre fortunate, but theres no low in the DS games that will be as abysmally low as the worst of DD

If you play sorcerer, then yeah you no longer have to worry about flat defense as you should probably be able to deal huge damage to anything with the right augments. It also really helps make pawns feel better: The only thing that keeps sorcerer pawns from being completely overpowered is that they are mentally retarded for the sorcerer role. If you are the sorcerer you can ALWAYS be overpowered, and now you want pawns to be on the frontline to protect you (and maybe a spell syncer) which works a lot better and has more interesting choices for their gear. You dont need to worry about their AI being hellbent on climbing enemies or whatever
The downside is that you might feel like your gameplay got too formulaic and stayed the same for the whole game when it comes to the big foes
>stand at a distance
>hold a button for a while to cast a huge nuke spell that functionally plays the same as the other nuke spells when it comes to your choices and the buttons you press
>enemy melted
>repeat
