Ultimately IP law killed gaming. The gradual consolidation of companies into huge conglomerations can't foster an industry that can create good games, either becoming too large to be concerned with regular industry motives or becoming subsumed by companies with adverse agendas.

In the 80s gamedev was pursued by adventurous men trying a new medium of expression. They didn't need millions of dollars to do it.
The equivalent of those men in modern generations are often either "playing it safe" and getting a job at a AAA or in webdev, or they are corrupted by current societal issues. A few do slip past these traps and are able to make great indie games.

No. Dudebros were the backbone of the whole industry, they're the reason gaming grew as a medium into more than a playground for kids and pathetic nerds.
Dudebros' interests in shit like CoD and Madden or FIFA or racing games (pure gameplay titles, by the way) fed the industry and allowed it to financially grow so even niche titles could gain attention they would've never attained if gaming stayed a loser hobby.
