I don’t usually start have an optimal hand. I go for flushes early since they’re easy to build, but I’ll switch to anything else if the chance comes up. With photochad, I like to aim for three or four of a kind, focusing on upgrading cards to kings or queens. Great if Sock and Buskin or a Triboulet show up.

I don't get this game. Most if not all the jokers just suck unless you get the most absurd and improbable combination of them. Most runs depend mostly on getting enough planet cards to boost up certain hands. Of all the roguelites I've played, this one has the most lackluster and boring items/modifiers

It's an A tier joker. If you can survive early antes playing 10-15+ pairs you should be set to win ante 8. Be careful with your high card if you are playing dead hands as discards. It can also save your run if you pivot off of playing only a single hand. I usually try to switch to running obelisk up at around ante 5.

I used to think this too until I realized how utterly broken card modifiers can stack with certain Joker combinations. It's a game where you really have to learn all of the synergies to be able to strategize properly, it just has a lot more variables to consider than most other roguelikes with their Att/Def/Spec stats.

I don't recommend going for all stickers unless you get all legendaries quickly. I have all gold stickers and only saw Yorick once. I just happened to win that game with him. Challenges are worth doing. All deck stakes are a nice mixup from your preferred way of playing.

Playing flushes and turning your whole deck into one suit. Play a ton of Jupiter's and pray you don't hit large blind in ante 8. That will barely eek out a win. You might be able to do the same with full houses. Straights are not reliable enough. Any lesser hands do not scale well enough with planets.
OR
Get very lucky and play ouija spectral card and and play 4oak. Mars gives +3 mult which makes a huge difference. It's going to be nearly impossible to get 4/5oak off the ground otherwise.
Golden needle was more challenging for me.

I'm new to this game, got it for free last month. I've been playing it late at night before bed since it's much more calming and less stimulating than the games I usually play.
Last night I won the game for the 3rd time ever. I feel like I'm not great at this because I can't calculate scores in my head, I get to ante 7 or 8 and then even playing strong hands like straights every turn still loses me the game if I wasn't lucky enough to come across jokers that multiply multi instead of just adding to it.

Try and get used to the ante amounts needed each round and compare that to the best roll you can have as a kind of metric on what you need to be trying to gain. Its not just about picking shit, you might need to reroll and save up some cash to do so. Its not a bad idea to pick shittier weaker cards earlier on just to help you through so you can save up for better stuff later.

Pay more attention to planet cards. Some scale better than others and it's not intuitive.
You don't need to do arithmetic; just have a sense for what your hands are scoring.
You might find it easier to jump straight into challenges because there are fewer decisions to make.
Plenty of guides on YT or you can watch talented players play. Track your decisions against theirs.
