They fucked it up because their direction for their IPs was shit and reactive rather than innovative.

Their formula was to take first party trilogies, produce comics, fight against robots to lower the age rating, create new games that are open ended so that they can make a new one and then open worlds. Now their goal is rebranding and going back to "their roots."

The 2 most obvious ones are Halo and Gears of War. Both follow that exact formula.
The problem is that instead of having a platform that was the best for creative studios to simply create, they moved to controlling the IPs with a reactionary formula to try and maximise profits.

MS figured that since they now had the Call of Duty dudebro audience on their consoles that they should pivot towards expanding and gaining a whole new audience as well, so they went all-in on casual gaming and the Kinect while completely ignoring the hardcore gamers. After all, what are they gonna do, buy a PlayStation? As if!

The controller is a Dreamcast controller that was modified with Sony's reactionary "OH YOU HAVE ON ANALOG STICK? WELL WE HAVE TWO ANALOG STICKS!" bullshit. It is essentially still a 6th gen controller and as such it is only capable of playing early 3D games.
The problem there is that most of the market was moving on to more complicated 3D games, which meant that every game needed to shoot itself in the foot to be playable on Xbox, due to the fundamental inability of dual analog to control a dynamic camera with any kind of speed or accuracy. Even now the most popular genres on console mostly play themselves and waste a lot of effort and potential complexity on making that assistance more smooth and unnoticeable for the average normalfag.

Microsoft fucked up badly ever since because everything they did with the Xbox killed the industry.

They weren't arrogant, they were just always retarded.
The spite-filled move of getting the PS1 to market earlier worked and bundling a DVD player with the PS2 also worked, but they had literally nothing in the tank after that other than trying to bundle in a bluray player.

It was mostly a fluke. They got lucky Sony went batshit insane with the PS3 price and architecture so that allowed the 360 to have the best third-party support

Truthfully, Microsoft has always been terrible at managing it's own studios. Xbox's two biggest franchises (Halo and Gears) were both made by third-party studios. The second those two franchises became internally developed at Microsoft they went to shit.

Turn10 is the only studio Microsoft directly created and controlled that has managed to build and maintain a franchise for a significant period of time.

Kinect was great and it's games were fun. The major issue Kinect had was you needed alot of space unlike the Wii. I think that is what really hurt Kinect. You could also save when playing Skyrim by using voice commands or head tracking on Forza. The Star Wars game was the worse game and it hurt the Kinect as well.

>>714769289
The Wii was great it just wasn't HD and had gamecube graphics which hurt it. But games and the console itself were cheap and everyone can play it. The PS3 had a few good games but multiplats ran like crap and the console itself felt cheap. Playing the 360 now I see why it won since it looked and felt like a million dollars.

It was before that. The second half of the 360's life was all Kinect and avatars. Not to mention the rotation of "Halo, Gears, Forza" was already getting stale

PS3 really got screwed on multiplats. The bethesda games are a great example. They all run worse than 360 and have ps3 specific bugs like corrupting your save overtime or straight up freezing the console.

They were successful but they abandoned their core fanbase out of hubris. The first half of the gen went so right for them that they not only felt like they could stop trying, but bu 2013 felt like they could force anything they wanted onto them and they'd just slurp it up. Kudos to any Xbots that actually had standards at the time of Xbone's launch but I also kinda feel sorry for them as well.

They were still releasing games to their core audience. 7th gen started ending around 2010 and 2011 and so they started focusing on the next gen around that time. Kinect was a great concept that should have had major improvements by the time Xbox One came out. The 360 was great even until the end.

Then they went all in on xbox being a multiplat machine while raping their exclusive IPs then later decided to have no exclusives at all. Also, backwards compatibility & gamepass.
They turned the xbox division into welfare for retards.
>hey phil we'll pay you 10 million a year to make hardware with no new games people want, a subscription service thats doomed to fail & we're giving you a blank check to overpay for developers that are way past their prime so we can shut them down in a few years.

>PS3 caught its lead by having several advantages like free online multiplayer, free access to streaming services, and better exclusives that aren't all motionslop among other things
>RRoD and Left 4 Dead DLC scandal hurt its reputation among passionate fans
>Don Mattrick told Jap devs to fuck off after he took over which is how and why you never got follow-ups to exclusive kino like Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon
>poor handling of classic Rare IP's like Conker, Perfect Dark, and Banjo-Kazooie, Rare sent to Kinect coal mines for almost a whole console generation
>Subpar handling of Halo and Gears of War IP following Bungie and Epic Games' departure
>Other popular IP's like Crackdown and Fable fizzled-out and became irrelevant after releasing mediocre games

And the whole Xbox One launch debacle speaks for itself. Microsoft was too arrogant to make it in the console business long-term, just like Sega before them.

>With all those classic Xbone games to show for it.

I'm saying consoles usually lasted five years on average so that's exactly what they did. They made great games for five years and the Kinect was a beta test for the Xbox One.

>It was a good one, and should have remained an optional one. It was too late for Microsoft by the time they walked back that one.

It was optional and Microsoft was still making games for their fans. The hate the 360 got was from journalists who shilled for the PS4 later on.

It's only crux was space and thats it. Otherwise Kinect games were fun if you weren't obese.

PS Move was optional more often than not, and generally worked okay for games since it had buttons like the Wii remote unlike the Kinect which isn't viable for anything but minigame collections, rail shooters, and rhythm games.

And so was the Kinect. What part of that are you not getting? Remember when the PS3 released a PS Move exclusive game and they had to remove that option? Kinect games were fun and it was better than the Wii controls imo.

Naaaaaah m8. It really is bad.
A controller that doesnt work 30% of the time is a broken controller. AndI'm pretty sure it was much higher with kinect.
Zero haptic feedback is why it sucked as well
