The gameplay of IX is pretty bad though. Trance is the worst LB mechanic of the series, ATB charges too slowly even at the fastest option and the "cast time" delay between choosing an action and it executing makes the game feel slow as hell.
The game is centered around the main character being a thief, so stealing bosses is recommended and you get really good rewards from it. With the synthesis system, ability points in gear and Quina's blue magic, you want to grind random encounters, but the combat is so slow that it ends up feeling very tedious. I think FF9 would be greatly improved just by making all the scene transitions between overworld and combat faster and the game becoming a true turn based game like FFX where you didn't have to wait for ATB to charge.

Fundamentally, what FFIX "needs" is a coat of paint. Some QoL work to fix some legitimate issues that couldn't be patched out with an update back then (which Moguri Mod solves most of), and some extra content for the half of the party who get forgotten about it from Disc 3 onwards.

It's the only thing at this point from an old Nvidia leak that hasn't come to pass, since even the FFT remake is real now. Add on the fact that we knew about the French animation studio handling an FFIX animation before going bankrupt and all the merch push for the 25th anniversary and it seems like they had something in mind.

The game is/was clearly in production in the last few years, they weren't on those databases without reason. This is either leading into a announcement later or they're remnants of a cancelled project now sold to make some extra profit out of it while the hype still exists (because they know you know).

Enemies focusing the character you're controlling while AI characters do absolutely nothing (not even generate ATB) is horrible combat design. Just remove the party entirely at that point.

IX's story is great, it being worse than what is probably the best FF story isn't some mark of shame. It’s not. Final Fantasy IX is far from perfect. Final Fantasy IX is often tried to be justified by saying that it's a "cute children's story", as if that should brush aside any claims against it. Even if we consider it from the standpoint of a fairytale, then it fails here too. Kuja is not a fairytale character at all, and Garland destroys the illusion of the deliberate simplicity of the local plot, winding up new turns of an inexplicable and indistinct whirlwind of facts over and over again, which does not add up to anything integral.(Hello, FFI) All this stuff about Gaia and Terra does not fit into the fairytale-ness that could be referred to throughout the first two disks. And needless to say, the game's attempt to look smart has completely failed.

In general, Final Fantasy IX is a very stupid game. In everything. Attempts to intricate the plot here are powerless and miserable, the drama is feigned, the characters are empty.
