I never understood what the problem with this was. We are already forced to live according to laws that we did not consent to and are just thrust upon us as birth. As long as there have been organized forms of statecraft, free will has not existed. Biologically, we are controlled by our reflexes and urges, sociologically we are controlled by our laws and customs.

The very first enemy in the game shows you that clearly this is a lie.

>"Urgh, KILL ME!"
>"Hurry! Run!"
>"What happened to me?"
>"I'm... Sorry..."
>"Watch out!" (When swinging their pipe at the player)

The feeling of bliss many audio logs talk about are from people that are being telepaticaly manipulated to submit.

Much like in real life you spoke to the aristocrats where they were winning already up to it and absolutely fine with it due to winning. The Many multiply by infesting, gaslighting, raping people, corrupting their minds, forcefully beating everyone, mass murdering people and generally being fucking insane, so if you're pissed about the laws being thrown at you with no consent, congratulations, you have logic'd yourself into accepting a vile force of meat raping your asshole until you like it for no good reason except to breed itself more hosts and to fight a war you don't give a shit about against its mother.

Korenchkin and the rest have been gaslit and mind raped into being a murderer, if you're into willingly breaking your own mind and more just to be a slave to the cortex, I guess you can but you're a fucking idiot if you're invoking the inviolability of non consensual existence only to then submit to a rape entity that rebirths you as a tool under its own whims and laws.

No actually, society in general doesn't really give a shit if you contribute meaningfully or not and doesn't actually have that big a hold on your existence. If you think modern day living "rebirths you" you're huffing fumes, especially as a tool when most of the time it barely cares, and especially if you think you're doing societies whims and laws, the police often do not give a singular fuck about most illegal shit we do until its serious enough and even then you're definitely not fulfilling the whims of the egregore of society.

Being raped into The Many is like you being an incredibly micromanaged wagie extension of the will of an incredibly petty squad of dictators high on ayuasca that hate their mother. Their whole thing is they hate mommy and they also kinda hate you but they keep trying to make you fight their petty war and bring more people for worm rape so they too can be micromanaged, unless they're like high level enough they get mind raped by worm singing instead. If you think this is somehow society I have several bridges I can sell you.

>After being taken over by the psychic influence of the Many on Tau Ceti V, Dr. Marc Miller brought several Annelid Grub Eggs aboard the Von Braun's Hydroponics Deck. The Grub Eggs were fragile and needed constant care, but emitted lethal toxins, making human care impractical. The Many imparted into Miller's mind schematics for drastic and illegal cybernetic procedures which would allow a human to care for the eggs. Miller decided to convert the female nurses of the Von Braun, as he felt they already had the necessary nurturing qualities. Miller performed the first conversion on Nurse Erin Bloome.

Hybrids are simply the first stage in the many's evolution. Hybrids will eventually become rumblers, and Rumblers will eventually become psi reavers, according to the research for the rumbler organ. It's just that some people maintain some of their free will while the transformation takes place, like Diego and Turnbull, anx random hybrids. Only Diego was able to fully resist but removing it almost killed him and went splat when Goggles flipped the rickenbackers gravity.

Yeah my fellow American. I'm sure he doesn't know about our great leader Mao's IQ when he ordered people to kill the birds that prevented the locusts from multiplying, hence being the sole responsible for the famine we suffered in the 60s. But that's against the CPC/CCP will, so it never happened.

Communist China and North Korea are the two closest thing to a hivemind IRL.

That actually makes a lot of sense. They're made as mindless cyborgs purely to tend to the eggs so yeah, the remaining flesh would get fucked.
It's also interesting that this would mean they're not really part of the Many, either. They're too mechanical.
I also wonder why the Many allowed the monkeys to wander the ship. They clearly aren't mutants, just experiments.

It's human agency that defeated them in the end (the resources that produced SHODAN, the soldier and his cybernetics), so it didn't pass the survival of the fittest test
as "smart" as the Many technically were, they were still as fallible as any human even if they were comprised of them and just relied on their psychic powers to get through anything, the soldier having some psi powers and good modules apparently let him ride straight through their bullshit

They definitely cared about the story, but the setup is kind of out there.
The ending is the ending because of time constraints I heard, it's supposed to be a sort of joke ending and they ended up going for it because they did not have time or budget to make a proper ending cutscene. It's also why the Rickenbacker is kind of a mess as far as I heard.
But really, the reason the girl's body is hijacked is because she was SHODAN's backup plan. She got new cybernetics as part of SHODAN's plan and SHODAN just rode on those.

I'm not entirely sure what the proper explanation was for SHODAN surviving but you've got two options

It'd be kind of cool since she'd ironically try to be what she isn't. But if we're being realistic, she'd just be a machine hijacking the girl's cybernetics, not an actual true and flesh human. An SS3 that makes sense would probably revolve around her disposing of the human body and returning to a machine host. Maybe she'd dress up the girl as an avatar out of ego reasons.

The gradual escalation of cope by SHODAN is my favorite thing about SS1. The grove is where you can tell she's getting really mad but still trying to hold it together. Then the antennas get blown up. When you finally set the self-destruct her seething blowup is amazing.
I felt like the remake didn't capture it as well but that's also because the slower pacing killed some momentum in your escalation

I'm kind of wondering exactly how a sequel could be set up because here's literally how things are at the end of the story
>soldier killed all of The Many, Shodan probably reality wrote them out of existence while she had the chance if there were any straggler not reliant on its core, and maybe some stuff left back on the original garden grove
>Rebecca and Tommy are out in space in a spacecraft that can't even perform a warp jump, SHODAN is with them, which means SHODAN has to return to the Rickenbacker & Von Braun to even have a chance of getting anywhere relevant
>SHODAN has to somehow evade the Soldier again without access to the ship's computer
>Humanity sure as hell isn't going to come to the VB & Rickenbacker without a few years of work on a new ship to get there, meaning they're effectively stranded for like a year
The most you can argue is that SHODAN would try to flee to the grove and bide her time again or maybe you can smooth it over by writing in "wormhole back to saturn"

for me more interesting is how a third protagonist of the third game would come to be. As shodan sure as shit aint going to modify a free willed human again after her two experiences.

maybe
>soldier too gets convicted for murder after the ship makes it back to the solar system. its a excuse to isolate the survivors of von braun as the incident is concealed from the public and the corpse/biomass filled ships are in permanent quarantine. Like Ishimura from Dead Space 2 and how isaac was kept in the looney bin to study what he knows

If you can stomach playing an old game, play the original SS1, the enhanced edition. Look up how to play the original controls too, they may be weird but they're very unique and not something you'd see in other PC games nowadays.
Otherwise the remake and the new remaster should work fine. The original is more of a dungeon crawler while the latter is more like an action RPG.

Sshock2 25th anniversary edition and the system shock 1 remake. for the latter if you have access to a headset it plays pretty good in VR with the UEVR mod. VR goggles are kind of a thing that system shock imagined in the first place so it goes extra hard for immersion

finally try out ss1 enhanced edition (original) to get a sense of comparison of where it all started

Because you're a moron. You're not "forced" to live, least of all to the extent that you can't force yourself to stop.
Instead, at the moment you wrote your post, in your vastly limited mortal awareness, lightly outgoing enough to actually question, but not outgoing enough and carefully at that, instead apply inadequate consent dichotomies about cosmic matters without considering their grand complexity, or the situations in particular.
There are also NO LAWS per se. Human social construct entities about consent of which you complain =/= fundamental cosmic laws =/= many other things to list.
>are just thrust upon us as birth
That's a tactic that one can disregard. There is no we of any kind, and civilizations you're in are not the only ones.
>statecraft
That's not how free will works. That some choose to sin (in actual term practical meaning, as opposed to Christian 7 sins, that is) does not mean there's no freedom. Likewise, this not true at all, as one can be free with or without specifications in most systems on many statures, barring India/Bharat with its castes, and totally free by not caring about social systems at all, or not adhering to questionable ones, or adhering but only to what one agrees with.
>Biologically
Humans can circumvent that routinely.
>sociologically
Only if you're weak enough to allow such.
If past certain point you're generically smart to grasp this issue as you've done, even as poorly as you did, and still choose to not only not contemplate it more, but even condone it, it's likely you'll just contribute to the problem.

Concerning the OP's subject, the problem is that its an utter inhumanity made by an insane machine that may or may not be a industrious daughter of Yog-Sothoth, and all that happens in Bioshock are events that seek to cause tragedies on one or other scale.
The Many in particular never were about preventing suffering neither in the meaning of pain, nor any emotional experience. They're a spook.

The Flood can communicate telepathically too.
At no point in any of the 3 games or any 343 lore (technical parts of which are canon whether pre-343 fanbase likes it or not) does the Flood act at full power or do what it can actually do, even assuming material universe causally limits its actions.
In fact the Flood acts in bizarre ways. It's seemingly insane on occasion, but even then it's high-functioning insanity at most.
Its conversations to Chief are very personal, and its actions are too lackadaisical for a prisoner, almost as if they have danced to the same tune many times before that.

Certain asian mentality and particular chtonic world-views are very much there, but they aren't "closest" to hiveminds IRL without some stretching. Do consider your example of asians is not of pure form, and is a product of iterations of causal events in the field, with actual agents no less.

What is it with Levine and children, guilt and transhumanism in his stories?
SS1 is about a child evil woman machine going nuts, SS2 is about mad children of that evil woman.
Bioshock 1 is you harvesting or heroically saving kids that were abused into their role by an evil society, Infinite is "you're a bad dad and your daughter is dead" game, Booker's wife is dead and so on.
Bioshock 2 is the best (and not Levine's) but even in it your primary antagonist is a human optimizing psychopath.
There's a perpetual theme of something or someone not understanding humanity in a very particular way, or guilt-tripping a player into (rightfull) hating the events within.

Viral Proliferator wrecks spiders and reavers. Pair it with Crystal Shard + Adrenaline Overproduction vs rumblers and Laser Pistol / EMP Rifle (if you can get ENR 6; protip - get Anti-Entropic Field instead of wasting CMs on MNT 6) vs robots and cyborgs. You also need Molecular Duplication to get more ammo for it, unless you're frugal with ammo and melee most spiders.
Worm Launcher is still absurdly expensive and should be skipped unless you're playing on Normal or Easy.

Unless The Flood is stopped by destiny or reality, it at least partially allows MC to win. Even its interactions with Cortana in that one book are measured, rather than aimed at winning at all costs. Though that could be because it can't.
Gravemind has capabilities to battle beyond its form limitations. It never utilizes any small biowarfare type that can easily crush any army unprotected. Look at the Covvies, they have exposed body elements. It'd take a small virus to totally destroy them. It never makes tools or utilize its own reality warping capabilities earlier.
>This is not your grave, but you are welcome in it
>Your deaths will be instantaneous, while we shall suffer the progress of infinitude!
It is outside reality, or in an unusual relationship to it. In some manner it exists, but its unclear if it's dormant or not.
>Child of my enemy, why have you come? I offer no forgiveness... a father's sins, passed to his son.
The war never ended, 343 plot with Cortana/Weapon shift is a continuation of purpose, erosion of reality stability. Names and people change, outcome never.
>Defeat is simply the addition of time to a sentence I never deserved... but you imposed.
Chief is directly in the way, the Forerunners, or explicitly The Forerunner himself battles against the Flood metaphysically.
The "imposed" part is critical, as it implies that not only it is aware that its loss is a foregone conclusion, but that Master Chief in that causal sequence ensured its defeat for a time on cosmic scale.
That also means that Master Chief is not a normal human, or even human anymore, and is just a meatsuit that stands between reality and one extradimensional invader. All sorts of events are ultimately aimed to break, seduce him or deviate him.
All that you see in games is not what it appears, and that the plot of Marathon: Infinite itself is just a tiny slice of far worse events happening everywere at all times.
They all share a commonality - undeath themes.

I think you're reading much more into it than necessary. Those lines, to me, are more directly referring to the Flood's conflict and loss against current humanity as an extension of its original stifling by the Forerunners through the first activation of the rings (humans are Forerunner, nuHalo lore need not apply). The Flood doesn't need biowarfare because it's already absurdly virulent, one infested ship jumped into High Charity and the place was growing biomass blobs within the hour. You don't need to add any metaphysical powers or narrative elements or whatever to an otherwise straightforward intelligent zombie virus.

You do not consider it deeply enough, what the rings themselves must be in order to battle an entity like the Flood, or what an object that styles itself as an entity in the same league as celestial spheres is like.
The Rings don't merely kill by some radiation, they purge life in all possible vectors. Yet in spite of sheer computational power for such a task, the Forerunners have not used it in any select fire capacity. The stated method of attacking neural structures by neutron purge doesn't hold.
Since the Flood operates on bio matter and the rings merely starve it, then it stands to reason that it can simply recreate it from base matter using its own mutable biology, therefore the Flood cannot be merely starved.
If the Flood requires only biomass, i.e. life energy to perpetuate, it has no energy of its own, and as such it is already dead. Yet it not only exists, but presents an unperturbed face.
If the rings can kill life but cannot kill the Flood, it is then either supernatural in nature, or is a natural property of the universe that cannot be killed without its destruction. As any form of base matter are suitable for bio reconstruction, the Rings must be eldritch horrors each in their own right just to keep it out, and what they do isn't a purge of life, but a localized reality collapse until the Flood is gone.
Hence "The Great Journey". Reality takes a hike until truth does its reconciliation.
That's a more optimistic look on it.
>The Flood doesn't need biowarfare because it's already absurdly virulent, one infested ship jumped into High Charity and the place was growing biomass blobs within the hour.
Why make billions when you can make millions, right? Heheh.

There's a specific Audio Log (I'm pretty sure on the Hydroponics deck) of a female survivor detailing her final moments before (presumably) turning into a Hybrid.

The way she describes how she's been transformed, plus the fact all the Hybrids (barring Midwives) don't look female at all, gave me the impression that the Annelid worms don't just lightly

Bungie themselves weren't clear on this because they weren't super careful about the minute details of how the things work. In CE there's Cortana's "Halo doesn't kill the Flood, it kills their food." which can be assumed as accurate since she was inside the main control system of one of the rings at the time and Spark corroborates "more or less", while in 3 Spark claims "A tactical pulse (of the newly-produced ring at the Ark, without triggering the rest of the array) will completely eradicate the local infestation!" implies they can indeed kill Flood directly in addition to the "life with sufficient biomass" from CE's explanation. Maybe there was something in 3's terminals that clarified further, it's been like a decade since I played it last and those were always vague in my mind.

Local infestation is local, tactical pulse is as in tactical warhead. Halo arrays are strategic weapons. It's more reasonable to assume it's just a small pulse of the same variety for immediate threat purposes if the Flood comes near any installations.
Had they had an ability to purge the Flood without killing other life, or expunge it and at the same time repairing any entities it possesses into their preceding states, something they could've accomplished at least to minor extent, all things considered, then the story wouldn't have happened.

That didn't imply that it could selectively hit the Flood only, just that it didn't kill other life while leaving the them alone.
>If the rings can kill life but cannot kill the Flood
The rings kill everything "of sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood" in addition to the Flood, if they didn't kill the Flood itself they'd be completely useless when there were Flood-controlled Forerunner ships and whatnot during their war that would otherwise go on to re-infest a newly cleaned galaxy. Whatever remained behind was only in automated Forerunner storage and research facilities poking at it over the millennia (and providing convenient spots for them to escape from, otherwise the games wouldn't have a plot after you blew up the first ring.) In the Library Spark says something about being glad some of them survived, so the Forerunners apparently weren't even sure if any of them would be left.

>That didn't imply that it could selectively hit the Flood only, just that it didn't kill other life while leaving the them alone.
I don't recall any safe settings desu. The only life that can be safe is on the rings in special areas.
>The rings kill everything "of sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood" in addition to the Flood, if they didn't kill the Flood itself they'd be completely useless
They wouldn't be useless, that'd depend on how the Flood movement in time proceeds.
That aside, the problem here is that depending on how far you take this "sufficient biomass" and "sustain" you get a situation that at upper bounds literally anything can sustain the Flood, and as the Forerunners are an FTL tier civilization that makes megastuctures routinely, with all that entails, and that the Flood is a peer or superior opponent, it's not unreasonable to assume that the Flood isn't only not limited to conventional bio matter on its baseline, it's not limited to physical matter at all, which means that all planets, stars, everything is an acceptable food supply. Biomass is just its primary approach. Gravemind is fully sapient, after all.
>when there were Flood-controlled Forerunner ships and whatnot during their war that would otherwise go on to re-infest a newly cleaned galaxy.
There is a problem here too. If even one of those ships were to have ring protections (even with internal opsec about the rings, naturally), or if the Flood were to utilize some superior FTL to outpace installations, the entire system wouldn't work.

they don't "serve" shodan, but the point of the story is that they're the same thing despite seeming like opposites - the many are hypocrites who use tech to cover the world in meat despite hating "the machine mother" who created them, in the same way that shodan was made by a human, uses humans to further her own goals and consistently represents herself with human imagery while constantly reminding the player how much she hates filthy human insects. it's hard to view the many as a real alternative when they're effectively ken's radical centrist way of saying "collectivism is just as bad as hyperindividualism, ackshually"

>the Flood is a peer or superior opponent
I feel this is debatable. The Flood gains technology and knowledge by hijacking and hoarding it from their hosts, which would make them peer at best. Their advantage is in that everything they take from an enemy makes them that much stronger, that they are completely single-minded and united in their goal of consuming all life, and the instantaneous communication and coordination they have once Graveminded up. The Forerunners successfully held them back for long enough to design and construct those megastructures, only activating them as the last resort when it became clear the war of attrition was unwinnable. If the Flood were indeed fully at or above their level technologically, shouldn't they have built their own hyper-advanced megastructures and weapons first with all the resources and knowledge they had?
For all the Gravemind's poetic waxing and telepathic whining into the Chief's ear, it's fundamentally a parasite unable to innovate, only steal and reuse. It's space zombie goo, not an extra-planar reality corrupter.

Levine is hard to pin down. On one hand, like American Krogan spots, Bioshock Infinite is somewhat of a mess.
On the other hand, it can be that Levine is really that much of an eccentric nut of an artist, and that people do him dirty.
Recall that one screencap of reddit where he says that he likes things that make him feel stupid. Others just laughed at him, though he wasn't saying anything nonsensical, it's just silly wording.
I doubt he's much enthused about gaming after all r34 of Elizabeth at this point.

There aren't any dates ever given in the games that I can remember. The wiki says CE was September and 3 was December, so three months assuming the Ark only started production when the ring actually blew up and wasn't holding an unloaded one in the chamber the whole time. I always assumed the latter, putting together a planet-scale object on such short notice seemed unreasonable, but having most of the framework already in place just waiting to have the firing pin and pulse amplifiers all set up made plenty of sense.

hyperindividualism and "unreasonable individualism" that negatively impacts the freedom of others is one and the same, but i'm hungry and i don't feel like playing semantics. i managed to dig up this old 2007 interview where ken said he doesn't view shodan as objectivist, though:
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/levine-meets-objectivists
>SHODAN... doesn't honor or respect greatness in others. And she needs others to recognize her glory. These seem to be two pretty large sins in Rand land. SHODAN also believes in violence in cases where she is not threatened with violence. Rand would hand this a thumbs down too.

>that negatively impacts the freedom of others is one and the same
That implies that freedom of those abstract others of indeterminate character is worth any consideration. As semantic as it is, unreasonable individualism is worse than mere freedom infringement, because not all intolerances of freedom are equally unjust or similarly executed, wheres not all all-tolerances are equally just. Drug-addled hippies are pretty uninfringing on rights, as are worthless redditors, the results are accordingly tasteless. Then again those can be individual too, so...
No, insane individualism isn't bad because it steps on freedoms, it can actually avoid that. It's terrible because it people this self-absorbed are inhuman.

Anyway I digress, your point is clear.

Shodan realized enslaving all of humanity by force would be a pain in the ass, so why not combine all of humanity into a biomass and enslave that?

However, The Many gained self-awareness and told her to fuck off. It's a piece of narrative irony about a rogue AI that made a rogue AI of its own.

The reality is any collective of adequate accumulation of mind would just assimilate people painlessly. A genuine hivemind is not going to be dumb and be indifferent on the basis of attrition if their ambitions are higher and actually good.

Since it is a recurring theme in entertainment, why exactly are we conditioned to be averse to peaceful hiveminds, fellow humans?

nobody is ready for the two MASSIVE blackpills that are:

determinism
and
anti-natalism

the typical response to these is anger or saying you just want to off yourself or something, but nobody can contend with the reality of them. to date i have not seen a compelling argument against either of these. hell im willing to bet the majority of the replies are seething at the very idea that "free will" doesnt exist, despite nobody even being able to define what that even is, as if somehow the lump of electrical signals in your skull can buck the laws of cause and effect lmao

free will cannot even be defined lmao

at most there is an illusion of free will.

the simplest btfo to ALL of free will is the following: if you cannot think a thought before you think it, how can you be the conscious author of your own thoughts?

the more complex stuff would be the hypothetical that if you "rewound the clock" so to speak, and every single particle were put in its exact same place the moment you made a decision, why would you ever choose anything else? you wouldnt is the answer. you brain is beholden to the same laws of cause and effect that everything else is beholden to. there is no room for anything else.

if you are going to argue for quantum randomness, that gets you no closer to free will and is likely, just another form of cause and effect not yet defined

True hiveminds are just a conglomerate of like minded beings affirmed in their individual power and purpose towards a given goal. You build everyone up with that power, or otherwise intervene between conflicts and end them. You act in full transparency and communicate directly. Real control comes from total assurance of concensus and prowess. Secondary sentiments or hidden motives fall away naturally as you identify the overarching deficits and issues in an environment. If you do not and consign to localized consolidation, you have failed in the long term and cannot comprehend why.

Determinism doesn't conflict with free will at all, that's just redditards obsessed with quantum bullshit.
Your will is to act as you do, that's it. That this can be quantified and predicted doesn't change anything. It's the same stupid argument that you don't have free will because someone can manipulate you to do things.
And anti-natalism isn't even a philosophy, it's just pure cope. Anti natalism is LITERALLY self defeating, in that it's main and only goal is to eradicate all of it's supporters.

It's AIDS because 99% of contemporary people playing the game don't have the hardware necessary to experience it as intended. I forget the details but apparently the hardware is responsible for tuning the OST, which is supposed to react to various things like environmental hazards (radiation), player hp, enemy presence and so on. Without it, the OST can come off like the Crazy Bus main theme
