does anyone else hate all the new shortcuts? before optimal play was pretty self explanatory, now you need to look up stuff and practice tricks just to compete and it's kind of gay. it used to be about execution and now game knowledge is like a way bigger factor. i just don't feel like studying tactics for mario kart

The only time I can think of where optimal play is self explanatory is 7 and 8 Deluxe, and most people consider 7 to be one of the most forgettable games in the series.

A lot of N64 shortcuts are extremely old and cut off a massive portion of the track, Super's interactions with mushrooms on ramps is completely different from other games and opens up a lot that isn't always immediately apparent. Besides that, there's a reason a lot of people considered 7 and 8 too basic, there's not much to do if you don't have an item that can do shortcuts and the act of driving itself isn't its own challenge like the older games could be.
