We need another COD game set during WW2.
In fact, imagine a COD game based on the cancelled Operation Downfall. It could have you fight the Japanese soldiers in brutal combat from Pearl Harbor, to the island hopping, to various Japanese cities (including Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just with brutal conventional warfare instead), to Tokyo, all the way to the Imperial Palace.

I'm sure their reasoning was because it didn't make sense anymore taking up developer time and money. I don't agree but I do agree that there's issues with security now. If you mean SM2, they started off making a MW2 (2009) mod altough that game never officially had any modtools released and they don't support it. But then they changed it to a newer engine and didn't require people to verify their games leading them to pirate the game essentially and they just shut it down but they a history of doing this.

tl;dr modding is safe (legal wise) on the officially mod supported CoDs: 1, 2, 4, 5, BO1 and BO3
there is a spectrum of modding though and most of these that get C&D try to mod the .exe of unsupported games.

Security wise all of these games still aren't safe. Some COD games just allow you to drop in a new .dll and it'll just execute it with no sandbox LOL. I think Wolfenstein ET also does or did this, but Quake had a QVM. Some other CoD games require more sophisticated exploits but they still exist and games like CoD4 actively use them to install their mod CoD4X.

It was made by Spark Unlimited, it's so bad that the slowdown is baked into the game itself unlike the sequels, Big Red One and COD3 made by Treyarch.

I really do miss COD before all the stupid Bond and Tom Clancy shit starting with MW2.

It's a pain to emulate, you'll go from steady 60 to a low 20 just because it's tied to the game logic.

Soviet one is the best, and hilariously the least historically authentic because it was inspired by Enemy at the Gates.
Actually when I look back at modern CoD games you don't see nearly as many big fights with lots of soldiers as you did in the early ones. Modern Warfare still had some big ones but the rest either don't exist or are extremely forgettable.

Yeah that's the nightmare fuel right there. It's wild how many of the older CoDs were just hilariously open to injection and exploitation, like the devs never thought anyone would poke around under the hood. CoD4X at least keeps the game alive with QOL improvements and a somewhat sane update pipeline, but man, the fact that security through obscurity is still the main defense in so many titles is actually insane.

Also SM2 getting nuked sucks but we all knew it was skating on thin ice with how they handled things. Playing fast and loose with piracy and .exe modding was basically waving a red flag at the suits. Sad days though, it was looking kino as hell.

I think the only times MW3 and Ghosts get the old feel of being a small skirmish in a bigger battle are NYC/Berlin and with Ghosts, the invasion of Caracas in the flashback.

I think the main issue with these modern games is just how fucking over the top they are.
Until World at War it was mostly grounded, your character wasn't jumping off crashing helicopters or surviving 20 feet falls from buildings.

This is a simplist view of things, Hitler made some bad decisions, but also some of his generals made bad decisions and sometimes his decisions were better, a lot of the myths surrounding the war come from post-war memories written by surviving nazi officers, which had the vested interest of making themselves look better.
