The real truth is that handheld games were always shit compared to console games and were only ever considered good in the context of an underpowered device that you can take with you or that parents could buy their kids so that they wouldn't be hogging the family TV. No one would have ever bought a Game Boy if it was in competition with a portable NES with a screen. There's simply no reason to play handheld games today.
