You can really tell that 1 went through multiple iterations and they had a lot of time to think about what they wanted the game to be.
The PS2 sequels are comparatively rushed. Far more mechanically competent but theres less narrative cohesion.
They eventually made the hunt for the missing Lombax race the central narrative of the franchise as a whole. Which is...fine. That's not a bad thing in itself but there were definitely a number of missteps and the fact that they still haven't moved past it in a meaningful way is frustrating.
I'm just glad the series is still alive.

Splatoon 3 is probably the better option as someone who owns both and likes both.
Splatoon 3 has a good campaign, a good multiplayer, a good coop horde mode, and a good DLC roguelite mode.
Rift Apart isn't the most gripping narrative or anything, but it kept me entertained. You can probably pirate it on PC or get it cheap so I guess if it's a money thing I'd do that.
Splatoon 3 runs native 4k on switch 2 which is also nice.

Even Rick and Morty couldn't keep that full cynicism forever, so I'm kinda glad Ratchet and Clank basically dropped it after the PS2 games. Deadlocked was the perfect capstone to that idea.

Deadlocked deserves more praise than it gets. It tends to get dismissed as a 'spinoff' despite being the darkest and most serious entry in the series.
Despite that it still has some of the most hilarious moments. Mostly because of Daran Norris from Fairly Oddparents as Dallas the commentator.

Yeah but even Rick & Morty made it a point that Rick was wrong and showed signs of it fairly early past those expositional episodes going over why he's so apathetic.
He did start to see his expendable replacement family as valuable even if he can't fully admit it.
Ratchet's cynicism is that the world you dream of being a part of and the people you look up to will disappointment so the few genuine good friends you do meet are all the more precious and that there's more to being a hero than fame and glory.
