Had you not abandoned that game you started developing years ago, you'd be finished with it by now, Anon.

I am aware. That's why I'm not abandoning the game. I'm currently working on. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Once I completely understand how to use AI and fine tune models to get exactly the type of art I want, I will make my ideal porn game. Don't even care if it makes money since fags on /v/ like girly female protagonist. My ideal protagonist is someone like Rance

>fuckhuge text document with gameplay ideas, level design, puzzles
>too ambitious for solo dev, too autistic to find help
I should just try making some simple roguelike slop and test my luck instead of dreaming up games.

You should take your most interesting idea and try making the smallest game possible to prove it works.
If it goes well, you either:
> have a small game that's worth sharing on its own.
> have the foundations for a larger game, one step closer to your dream game.
If it goes badly, you've figured out the idea doesn't work without wasting 10 years building your uber-game on a bad foundation.
It's not easy, but it's gotten me a lot closer to making the games I want to make.

Not him but my game is of a monk touring multiple places around the Mediterranean and the game literally won't work without having a dozen different towns, keeps, and castles in very different settings. How do you even start small on a concept like this

Make every town a single poorly-drawn 200x300-pixel image where you click on parts of the image to do whatever it is you do in the game.
Whatever mechanics you think you need can be done later, once you know your idea for the world is actually interesting.

Make it very crude and 8-bit at first, you can always expand the art later. Depends on the genre of game and what you'll actually be doing there though

So I should do it like classic Runescape first with shitty 2D drawings and then upgrade everything to 3D? Seems a bit like double work just to get through the demoing phase of the dev cycle.

i have no ideas that havent already been done so theres no point in working on anything. only thing i could have done is iterate on an idea and make it less janky, but i am not talented enough to do that alone.

I'm still on the writing stage of the game (15 years of animation/art experience but never tried making my own). How is it for other people I wonder? With art, I can make something and take a look at it and enjoy it afterwards. With writing however, I play around with an idea in my head, write it out, go "well not bad", then come back to it tomorrow, read it back, and feel nothing but cringe over what i wrote. It just feels like the text is not something anyone could actually enjoy if i myself find it meh to read. Always feels like the character isn't interesting enough, or should be more unhinged, etc.

it can help to mingle with other writers and share it with them so you can get some constructive criticism. a lot of the time it helps to just have another person behold whatever creative thing youre working on. i used to be the kind of person that makes music, but only for myself, so i never released it. i eventually came to realize that an obsession with perfectionism and insularism can really make you pidgeonholed and having a fresh set of eyes/ears listen to what you made, can make a huge difference.

Yeah, I really don't want to show it to anyone until it feels "good" to me. But likely i am just chasing that perfectionism writing level that probably isn't something that's actually tangible or achievable (in my first game of all things).
