The NES as hardware is extremely limited, so you kind of accidentally discover ways to get around the challenges the devs tried to throw at you. Like de-spawning enemies in Ninja Gaiden or TMNT, or using the same technique throughout the entire game in Double Dragon 3. My brother finished most NES games with this mindset when he was 8 years old.
There are some games that are legitimately difficult, though. I think Battletoads is a good example. That game will require intense memorization and good execution if you don't use warp zones.
