Fnaf was built off a preexisting fear some people had towards animatronic performers. The stilted movement and completely dead expressions are what do it.
Everything else is just using mascots for branding and merch. Look at the OP pic and how as time goes on designs get more colorful and cartoonie, it was all done to maximize recognizably over horror value.
