why. why do so many indie games wanna be roguelikes? at this point it feels like an excuse to cheap out on level design. and so many of them are so fucking boring and play the same as each other. you get a few unique ones like World of Horror, or Cogmind, but most just blend together. just give me hand crafted levels, man.

The real crime is that it's either a shitty card game by someone who has never played a card game, or another fucking vampire survivor clone.

What game or games are you even talking about. I've never stumbled into a roguelike and said "I wish this was a more limited game that's story focused"

STRAFE is a good example. that game wouldve been so much better if it didnt rely so heavily on proc gen for its levels. every level just blends together.

you forgot the 3rd option: side scrolling twin stick shooter that somehow fucks up the controls in every way. Noita is the exception, that games pretty good.

I'd say that's a bad example because we have games like that already in Ultrakill or the melee one that's coming out(soon) procedural generation is more for keeping runs fresh and having you play off mechanics rather than targeting people who want to play off memorization.

but as a result, proc gen just makes levels feel boring. its not even a true roguelike experience most of the time, since games like these often just have pre designed chunks that get randomly slapped together. fps rougelikes are a neat idea but the only times ive seen it work are Nightmare Reaper and the Vermintide 2 Chaos Wastes

Because its a game format that presents immediate focus on gameplay and nothing else which is an appealing starting point for a solo programmer with barely any art or writing skill.

Chaos Wastes isn't really roguelike. You get random weapons and upgrade them sure but there's only like 5 maps and no procedural generation at all. I still find it fun but it's not really on par with a roguelike game it's just borrowing some aesthetic from them.

but alot of these arent even true roguelikes anyway since they're pre made level chunks that get shuffled around. if they do this to save time and money, why not just go the Rogue or ADOM route and have EVERYTHING be completely random?

Because if you do that, you get to skip the balancing and level design parts. Basically, it's because they're lazy.

Every industry does that. Why single out independent video games?

I guess it's their way to try and give what are essentially arcade games more replay value. Although I feel like the best of both worlds would be a mix of generated and hand-designed levels. Or even better, perks that reward playing well but you're still essentially a glass cannon so the game isn't trivialized. Wouldn't that be nice? Instead of grinding for experience points and levels or points to use on a skill tree, you fill up a meter that rewards you with a perk until you take too much damage or die?

Also Amy is a chubby ditz with a big fat ass.
