>>714831128LA times crossword isn't so bad. monday/tuesday/wednesday are quite basic, it's not until thursday/friday that the difficulty gets amped up. saturday is mean and sunday is just big, but mostly monday~wednesday difficulty. most of the difficulty comes from figuring out the editor/writer in how they structure the clues and what they mean. stuff like abbreviations in a clue lead to abbreviations in the answer, question marks denote puns or other diagonal thought processes, asterisks tend to denote a theme throughout the current crossword, capital letters of words often denote proper nouns.
don't get me wrong, there will be a bunch of answers that you straight up will not know until you look it up (proper knowns, boomer trivia, etc) or solve it via crosswords. but oftentimes they'll use that word or name often enough that you'll remember it in the future. there's also lots of jewish cultural references (food, holidays, names) in LA times crossword (and probably NYT, but I haven't done one of those in a while), so be prepared for that.
as a reference, OP's crossword is pretty obtuse even as someone who does them every single day. I legitimately have to agree with OP's greentext in this regard since LA times doesn't feel nearly as bizarre. but maybe boomer crosswords were just on a different level compared to the recent trend. however, there was an editor change in LA times crossword a number of years ago and that marked a noticeable nerf in difficulty from previous years. but there's a bigger gulf in difference between the easiest and the hardest so it's mostly a wash when you average it out.
