The one without the dumbass cheat ring or whatever, completely unnecessary.

There's some patches that make it so you're not dragging your nuts over broken glass. I recommend getting one of those.

The purist side of me wants to say to play the official release... but the original Famicom/NES version can be a dreadful playthrough, even compared to a lot of other RPGs from its time. Though this honestly depends on whether you want to play with the easy ring, or play the game how it was originally intended to be played.

Whatever version with the ring. The encounter rate in the original game is annoying.

>The encounter rate in the original game is annoying
And the mountains of cash and XP you get from all of the random encounters make the original version of M1 less tedious (though not by much)

The original FC version with the fan translation and the run button patch, which is still slow but still better than nothing. Also apply a lower encounter rate and higher xp gain patch because the battle rates are absurd and you don't miss out of anything.
Now be aware that the controls on the FC version are absolute ass, as in probably the least comfy controls you've ever seen in an RPG. Yes, they literally made walking feel like a chore.
However, the music of the FC version is beautiful and I think that's how it should be experienced.

They suck ass but I respect it for being fairly ahead of its time, not a lot of NES games (that I can name anyways) used 8 directional movement

Mother Restored was fine. I should have used the ring. It really was tedious.

I think they should have simply done 4 directions with tiles like rpg maker that doesn't make me want to kill myself but I suppose it was s novelty indeed.

I want to play this but I looked the gameplay for a bit and it has the annoying random encounter spam that nips love for some stupid reason

That's right. It's still worth it, even if it's just once in your life.

It's a JRPG from the '80s, I don't know why you were expecting anything different
