I think the devs behind the anti-soul gas have never used their eyes before. Despite how """realistic""" they like to claim grafix are, i've never seen it be THAT hazy outside of walking in to a closed room where a smoker had been chaining through cigs for a few hours.

Because they are remakes. By definition they'll never be the same experience because they will never have the same people working on them under the same circumstances, even the good remakes like God Eater Resurrection will inevitably change some aspects for the worse even if the end product is widely considered to be better.
Then you add the nature of remaking someone else's work to the fact that all the players/viewers of the original have a different interpretation of it and there's absolutely no way you could possibly get people fully on board. To remake something and improve upon it you have to actually understand what makes the original good in the first place.

The only reasons to do a remake are,
>the original actually is fucked up, but you'd still like to tell the same story or recreate that experience better this time
>you want money easily from the brand recognition
>you want to subvert culture and replace the messages of the previous work with your own in people's conscious
The latter two options are the norm, unfortunately.

I don't like that they look so clean. The dirty, industrial, bleak and grey look the original Gears had matched the setting. But here they look like glistening, plastic dolls. The charm is completely gone.

oh fuck no they don't. If they actually had OLED and HDR in mind then we'd have at the very least movie slop tier HDR and contrast but instead video games have utterly deranged settings that the only explanation I can muster is that the retards at Unreal and Capcom to name but two have all their HDR test monitors set to fuckwit mode and they've hard locked their black floor to something that looks good on their fucked up settings. There is NOTHING you can do to RE2R/RE3R that prevents the black level raise. Setting it to SDR gives you a sane black level. Not a perfect one mind, but a SANE one at least. OLED with its perfect blacks doesn't make it better, it just highlights how retarded their gamma curve is.

the answer is that all game developers have been convinced "global illumination" and "volumetric lighting" are beautiful and accurate technologies that make games look better. but actually they're just ugly and wash everything out.

1. Older games were made by actually talented devs with love for gaming
2. Demakes are made by pajeets, normalfags, diversity hires and women who couldn't find a job elsewhere
3. 99% of remakes and remasters are corporate cashgrabs designed to make easy money from a game that already exists.

GoW was always ugly, had terrible bloom and that signature UE3 purple tint.
If UE5 is stutter engine than UE3 was the bloom engine.

Nah, a lot of people 100% say that. It's not just about the remake being technically worse, it's about how the original had a raw, gritty vibe that felt cohesive with the tone. Yeah, the bloom and piss filters were overkill sometimes, but they accidentally gave stuff personality. Now it's like they scrubbed the soul out with generic lighting presets and plastic shaders.

I prefer the original.
I checked just now, and they switched to the raised metal pieces in the Ultimate Edition back in 2015, but I think that was a lousy creative decision that's been passed onto the modern remake like a game of telephone, losing bits of meaning over the years.
The stencil implies it was standard armor that's been hastily modified.
The metal piece could be something quickly cast. It has the look of fresh cast iron from a crude mold, but it doesn't make as much sense. If you need boots on the ground yesterday because the world is ending, casting medallions for the boys is a waste of time.
Sure, it shows off the graphics better, but the armor's otherwise very utilitarian. Metal ornaments imply a sort of opulence and power that the humans in this game don't have.

This is my big problem with remakes as a general concept.
Even little decisions can reinforce broader ideas.
With remakes, the publisher usually takes the C-team it didn't trust with an original game and asks them to redo every one of those little decisions.
In the end, you have something with the same overall shape as the original, but the details rarely reinforce the big picture as well as they used to.
