Why was Halo so successful in the 2000s? And what went wrong?

This, Halo 3 getting mogged by CoD4 pretty much led to Bungie and then 343 taking way more notes than they should've from CoD

Wrong. Halo owes its success to Perfect Dark and Golden Eye. It stepped into the empty niche they left of 'Not Gay Party Game.' Anyone around at the time knows what I mean, except the token Timesplitters 2 retard in every friend circle. I expect some of them died young and now wander the earth to this very day trying to get people to play Timesplitters 2 with them.
