It was super ambitious when it came out, yeah, but most of the character writing feels limited to a few key moments and then barely followed up on.
Meanwhile, even just Cloud’s inner conflict in VII feels like it aged better, and X’s writing overall holds up way more in terms of character interaction and depth.

>It was super ambitious when it came out, yeah
Nah, not really, there's nothing ambitious about FF6

It's still a good game, but it does suffer if the more shallow, less guided design of the early 90s. LTTP has similar issues, making it way less enjoyable to play these days.

If they did something akin to cloud's inner conflict FF6 would not be rated E , also the censorship on the SNES was fucking nuts so some segments of the plot like celes getting beaten by guards and the people jumping off the cliffs in the world of ruin had to be changed , you're comparing a game made for the standards of SNES of the time to the less restrained and barely censored PSX
If 6 was made for the PSX it would be completely different as well because it would be made in an era that prioritizes experimentation and unorthodox dilemas like split personalities and mental trauma like FF7 and xenogears

This is the game that really needed a remake
fully in Amano style though in 3d of course it must look very close to the artwork. And there have heavy themes like suicide elaborated further

Nothing about 7 aged well. It looks like shit, basically a tech demo for 8 and 9 which aged far better. 6 is timeless because it leans into the technical limitations of the console and uses them to create interesting set pieces. It would be very silly to have a fight in midair while falling with realistic graphics but it works perfectly with sprites, for example. Meanwhile everything in 7 would've worked better with better graphics, which is why people were so mad about the dogshit 7 remake.

>Crystal Bearers literally opens with a midair fight while falling
Aggressive midwit nonsense with absolutely no basis on reality

Coming back to the pixel remasters after not touching the games in 15 years…they’re kind of boring. Or more like their age is showing. The music carries them hard.

The game doesn't drown you in word salad or worse cutscenes like the movie games that came after it. If anything playing with a sparse but punctual story has aged like fine wine.

>Entertaining story
>Great music
>Good pacing (i.e. getting into and out of battles doesn't take forever). Honestly the most important aspect of any JRPG regardless of how good other aspects are.
>Varied party members with their own combat roles
Nah it's still awesome. Obviously succeeding games could show big story moments better thanks to 3D graphics and FMV cutscenes. Play other 16 bit JRPGs and I think you'll start to appreciate FF6 more.

I do think 90% of VI's character story is on the cutting room floor due to cartridge space limitations, yes. However 1994 Square was a master of implication, so you can piece a lot of it together yourself (which is good, it gives player engagement to the story.) and because of the limitations you can infer, that whatever remained of the character aspects (especially if they make two appearances) are extremely central to their arcs and personality, because they weren't cut. Thus every character moment has gravitas and there's zero wasted moments. The other accidental resulting quality from this, which makes VI's story a masterpiece, is that this snap writing is extremely beneficial to pacing of the story as well (Not V tier, but nothing will ever reach that again).

So, while, yes, I've always dreamt of a remake of VI, where we could actually see all the characters with nuanced and fleshed out backstories, present actions, mindsets and spoken lines (especially Terra having a psychological dissection like her genderbent version in VII got would push her above him for me), I already know that it will harm the pacing, so it can't ever surpass VI as is in quality. That doesn't mean I'm not willing to make that sacrifice for my personal fanservice at the detriment of others. I can deal with the story turning glacial for it. I would like it, but objectively it would be bad.

All of the above is inevitable in ideal conditions by the way. Square-Enix will not be ideal and I will be mad. Yet still I actually want them to rape VI with a Remake unlike me opposing every single other Remake. VI has that hold over me.

Amanos style deserves a world far more fantastical than any FF to date. Think Dancers at the End of a Time or something like that.

this is the most boring of the pixel games, I didn't struggle to play through ff2 as much as I have ff6

VI is clearly when the rot begun., when they became more concerned with cringy hay storylines instead of gameplay.
All I remember from ir is being annoyed ar some teather section that was raking too long and a failed attempt at being funny with some octopus boss
V is superior.
