Is RPG Maker slop the ultimate proof that gameplay isn't that important if all the surrounding elements are good? I fail to believe some people actually find Look Outside or Fear & Hunger gameplay engaging.

of course the gameplay isn't engaging, and anyone who thinks so is insane. I haven't played Look Outside, but F&H is all about luck and hindsight. Little can be intuited naturally and you have to go through gauntlets of trial and error bullshit to progress (on *basically* limited save games no less!)
Still, it has an amazing atmosphere and artstyle. The atmosphere is genuinely oppressive. Honestly, in my opinion, it also has some incredible worldbuilding too. It isn't much, of course, but the world described sounds very hellish and that adds a lot to a game, especially a horror game. One of the best Dark Fantasy settings to come out of the medium since probably Dark Souls.

So yes, OP. People will ignore glaring gameplay flaws if everything else is top notch.

im not going to say look outside has the most engaging gameplay ever but it definitely adheres to the basic requirements of rpg fun

those being that the fun is in the unexpected. it's in the fact your guy died to the enemy's attack unexpectedly and now you have to scramble or expend resources. it's in the fact that i want to use mana in this fight and have to weigh the opportunity cost of that against potential future fights. the battles that surprise you when you're low on resources. it's planning and execution and adjusting when neither of those things go perfectly.

look outside has serviceable rpg gameplay. ill stand by this.

Yes artstyle, music, characters, setting and story was always more important than gameplay, if the gameplay is mid but everything surrounding is great then itโ€™s okay

That is incredibly rare to happen though, doesn't make it more important than gameplay.
It actually shows how gameplay is so important that the lack of it dictates that everything else needs to be top notch.
But a game with great gameplay can be carried solely by it.

The combat in RPGMaker titles mostly acts as a time gate for seeing the interesting stuff that makes you feel like you're accomplishing something. Side note, Frankie hinted at more Jeanne content a few days ago on stream. If he's lying I'm going to beat his ass.

Gameplay is the most important thing in any game. It's just that 4 niggas in a row is a great concept, even if executed poorly or in its very basic form.

Fear & Hunger fucking sucks and if you like it you are severely mentally ill.
Same goes for any turn based trash that's built around being as bullshit unfair as possible.

It's just fucking terrible game design. Decades behind in every possible way. The only people I have seen that like it are the most arrogant contrarian smug retards you can imagine who treat games like this as a badge of superiority more than treating them as the dogshit unplayable slog they are.

OP is completely fucking wrong in the sense he doesn't understand how small the minority is on shit like this. Nobody sane likes turbo-unfair fuck you turn-based dogshit. At best they'll play it for a novelty then drop it forever. Your truly delusional if you think shit like Fear & Hunger can find reliable success in today's industry but if you want to make it, I won't discourage you.

I just finished Look Outside a couple of days ago and the gameplay was okay for a four niggas in a row type of game
I liked that the items were actually useful and the game incentivises you to use them. I wouldn't say the gameplay wasn't important either, if it wasn't decently engaging to play I probably would have dropped it

The part where you plan for each encounter and try and gauge how long you can keep going and what supplies/items/skills you intend to use or hold in reserve for each fight is fun, even if it's not terribly stimulating
