>lowball estimate of 5.4 million sold in the first month
>still selling 150k+ in japan ALONE
>Both exclusives so far have been rated favorably by reviewers
What caused this? Every indication said it was going to do poorly. Has the pattern been broken?

The dumb "every other Nintendo home console release is doomed" FUD coupled with all of the price scares and all of the headlines. I think it's fair to have thought the console would do badly, and it's not like that can't still happen with time, but we at least know for certain this won't even be remotely close to another Wii U or more similarly 3DS situation.

People think Nintendo will be inspired by headline backlash to lower prices, as if Nintendo hasn't consistently beared the ire of journos for maybe decades at this point. The only way to get them to do anything about their "anti-consumerism" is to make the console a flop by not buying it. The 3DS's sales volume outside of the launch window took a complete nosedive off a cliff. Had it not been for that, there wouldn't have been any response by the company, Iwata notwithstanding. Switch 2 sales volume plummets to 5 million units for the entirety of year 2? Maybe we'd see some progress, but Nintendo's IP is way too strong right now for people not to want to buy in as more releases roll along.

>poorly
Only steam and sony fanboys actually thought that, it's success was to be expected it's just a matter of how can Nintendo hold this success with things like pricing and software, but software at least from Nintendo is definitely on the way, it's more of an issue of reveals, and even pricing, well everything is up, why wouldn't a Switch follow up cost more. GPUs prices are through the roof, most food is through the roof, sure people can complain that the price of a Switch and games is up but for everyone else the price of everything is up so they just accept that games are going to cost more. In case this is someone's first time online people who play video games complain non stop, hell my next paragraph is going to be complaints about third party on the Switch
Third party on the Switch is a total joke and I wish Nintendo would dump that shit, how the fuck do they square the shitty low effort support of the Switch 2 with it being the fastest selling console in history with a fucking power gap, no really, this is getting absurd, am I supposed to believe that Xbox should be prioritized over Nintendo hardware, the console that's already dead where games go to die should have more and better Japanese software support than a console that is literally going to be the best selling current console in Japan by the end of the year, what the actual fuck.

I'm honestly shocked it sold well outside of Japan given the price jump from Switch 1. I know Mario Kart is a big unit mover for most, hell MK8D was probably a bigger selling point for Switch 1 than BOTW was but even then the Switch 1 was several hundred dollars cheaper and had more games at launch. Switch 2 has MKW and nothing else and costs $500 with future batches likely getting a 25% upcharge from tariff shit. As someone who got a Switch 1 on launch day I'm not touching Switch 2 until a price drop or OLED version comes out.

Everyone is sick and tired of their old Switch and getting into debt is easier than ever, you can apply for financing or credit cards on every corner around the world so price isn't really a consideration for regular people.

And just to add, the price here in South America is awful and I wanted to wait a bit but the looming threat of a price increased made me buy mine last week.

It was and it wasn't, there wasn't any other real option for a Switch at launch, and there wasn't for a few years after since Nvidia's Tegra X2 was legitimately a piece of shit. Switch 2 is a lot more powerful than a PS4, but Nintendo should have pushed Nvidia to bump the hardware up a single generation, but I can see issues with existing contracts making that impossible, Switch 3 though, that's going to be something.
