I think you mean the opposite, there's very little engagement in Yoshi's Island if you're just going through the levels without trying to collect stuff.

When a game offers an optional task that makes the game less fun if you try it.

Honestly I would have thought 100%'ing this game would be uber fun because it makes it a lot more difficult in a fun way, but it kept pulling the same "ha ha there's a bunch of hidden crates off camera/obscured by something and there's always two or three more than you'd expect get fucked" trick it keeps doing every other level.

Yoshi's Island's levels are way too long to justify the amount of collectables they ask of you, and the game is set up to require all runs be perfect. You mess up and you have to redo everything. Add onto that the fact that the red coins are hidden, collectables can be missable, and a minor mistake near the end of the level means redoing everything and it becomes much less fun because you hae to hyper focus on groundpounding every pole and not getting hit.

My only issue is with the red coins that disappear such as the ones carried by flying enemies. Flowers are usually pretty easy to find and you can cheese stars with item cards right at the end of the level.

You can store star giving items so being hit near the end is a literal non issue
It was a bigger problem in yoshi's Island DS because not only were these items removed, they also hid things in between the screens so you will often be missing a couple red coins or get hit by an enemy that wasn't on either screen. On top of the levels being way longer than its predecessor and having you backtrack to switch babies

Wrong except for losing your 30 stars before the boss. Just remember to use your star item right before touching the last checkpoint as you can't use them on the boss.

DKC 3 is the only one I bothered to 100% when I was a kid, since it made it seem easier to track what you've completed and gave you a bunch of mini-objectives to keep it fresh. DK Koins and Banana Birds had their own little minigame attached to them instead of just being another thing you've gotta find hidden doors and make blind leaps for.

Instead of just finishing levels seeing constantly new levels, story, content until you get to a satisfying ending. you autistically comb levels bored out of your mind for pickups or do busy work ai generated tier side quests like Ubisoft games tend to have

Games aren't designed to be played to 100% completion. Any extra content is just that; optional stuff outside of just beating the game regularly if you want to revisit it.

My favourite game ever
I love the cyber elf system so much because I literally get to ignore it completely and S Rank the game just they way it was truly intended

All those who are maximum upgrade-brained get to suffer trying to feed and level up those fucking things so they can have their short moment of hollow power-tripping

Godspeed to those who try to unlock the ultimate form
>Collect every elf, feed them, use them all
Fuck that lmao

Last Remnant does something similar. Final boss has a rank that increases based on how many sidequests you did, and some of the sidequests could only be completed at certain points. Getting the most powerful version of the final boss requires doing the most challenging content in the game.

I respect that in Yoshis Wooly World each objective is separate which makes completionism much more approachable since you can focus on collecting everything and then going for max HP on a separate run
