This especially feels wrong when Alan Wake turned out to be a poorly written and braindead shootan game.

that's the least of Alan Wake's problems. Remedy games really need to stop just locking you in rooms with a bunch of copy pasted enemies, and thinking that is some kind of substitute for well crafted game design.
Apart from that, they're really good.
I don't want to fight the basic shadow monster again. It's not scary, it's not fun. It's padding.

Max Payne 1. Taken seriously. (Remedy Connected Universe encouraged alternate approach* of viewing the MP1 experience with the lense of MP2 by playing the sequel first and then MP1 for a replay pair is also wildly interesting, but I still prefer MP1 as a standalone product.)

Didn't Alan Wake go through some development hell? Apparently they wasted Microsoft's money and time developing a fully functioning open-world complete with a day-night cycle, but pivoted late into a linear shooty game. Sounds plausible that they grabbed an emergency plan-B off another forgotten game so MS won't sue their ass.
