it's funny how MW5M's new WASD controls (iirc came out with DLC5) are more canonical to actual BattleMech lore, where you could play fucking mech football with these stupid things, and a whole host of nonsense regarding Myomer muscle fibre which is MEANT to make controlling the BattleMech exactly like controlling your own body.

In case anyone actually wants the answer, the reason this game is so great is because the mechs move very slowly, to the point where it actually feels like you're piloting a 55 ton walking tank. In addition, all the mechs are modular, and the loadout customization system is essentially the same as the tabletop. All together, it feels like a sincere military sim, rather than a flanderized explosion simulator

you should know why they call infantry "squishies"

My problem is, I know this is the limitation of the game, the lines they spoke when they "die" either by destroy the leg sounds like they actually dying rather than just having their mech disabled- was most of the upper torso even the cockpit undamaged

They kind of fixed this in 4 that you can't really destroy a match despite disabled one of the legs. No I hate the fact that you can do precise targeting because you can't use the mouse to move the arms.

The best you can do is a lightly modded story campaign of MW5 followed by the freeplay version modded to high hell to fix everything wrong with the game (jk, you cannot fix that AI). There is enjoyment to be had but don't put down serious cash to enjoy this shit.

Not talking about clans btw, don't give them cash for that expansion turned cashgrab.

really damn good suit in this game if you play like the aggressive flanker it wants you to be, also has a High Mobility variant that tries to recreate Gerbera Tetra's Sturm Booster tech
>runs like shit
it does in the lobby, and if you have an iGPU because it'll use that instead of your dedicated GPU, otherwise runs at solid 60FPS on a 1050ti
>matchmaking is virtually non-functioning
it's a low-player-count game on PC, so you gotta go with the ebb and flow of the japanese players (aka 8-to-4 GMT)
>most insane peakers advantage I've ever seen
do remember that everything that applies to you also applies to them, and some people are incapable of responding to left-side peaks for some reason so you can just shit all over them with a retarded push
>extremely punishing leaver system
yeah I agree, the penalty system is extremely retarded and it only punishes people who have packet loss, and not genuinely laggy individuals who fucking teleport you into their counters (despite you boosting out of your own melee animation ages before that) due to how attacker-sided it really is

game's fucking great when you're playing with clanmates or the internet is good. most of my 6 digit games are always from games where everything I did worked as it should because the chinkternet wasn't scamming me

as for why I personally love this game myself
>great selection of Zeon/Titans MS, alongside shit from MSV that I'd never be able to play in any other Gundam game
>rock solid gameplay that's more akin to old arena brawlers like Dissidia, but as a team game
>high highs where you can just annihilate shit without breaking a sweat, low lows where you still find ways to break through the insurmountable wall and get that cheeky rival win
many of the things I want in the game are basically just QoL stuff, like speeding up menus, making grinding less obtuse, easier monthlies (like the christmas ones), but there's two things I distinctly want more than anything else
>remove part damage (makes shitters actually have to fight back instead of relying on OP 'you can't fight back' suits like GU4 and Efreet Jaeger)
>remove pilot gameplay AS A WHOLE (being down a teammate 2 minutes of the whole match for the sake of 3000 score is not fun or engaging, alongside the fucking jank of having to capture beacons as pilot when you're in a mech with advanced sensors and transceivers)

Pilot gameplay is "cute" but it's almost entirely a negative in practice. Aside from your first few rounds where you jump in and out and maybe the first time you bomb a base you realize it's 90% just throwing to play as a pilot for anything other than objectives.

I wasn't crazy about how the game kind of turns into shooting bazookas at the ground and moshing each other. It's not terrible, there's a sense of satisfaction in it and it functions well enough. It's just weird seeing mobile suits chest bumping each other to try and trick the other guy into meleeing first. Great gameplay mechanics for something else that isn't gundam.

the issue is that GBO2 is pretty much the best we've got because everything else is just Gundam-flavored. Breaker games are just musous with a Gundam flavor (when Dynasty Warriors Gundam already existed lol), Evolution was just Overwatch with boosting mechanics, etc.

Yeah thats the problem. I played it with a bunch of goobers from /m/ and /v/ when it first hit steam and when it worked it was unlike anything else. My problem was that sitting around for an hour plus trying to get
>a queue that doesnt drop
>a lobby that doesnt drop
>a match with relatively even skill distribution
>a match that makes it all the way through without a leaver
>a match that makes it all the way through without someone afking in pilot deployment
>etc
was just too much of a hassle and I burned out. I wish it just werked and I'm afraid it has killed gundam games coming to the west because they're gonna point to its failure and go "LOOK, WESTERN PIGGUS HATE GUNDAM GAMES"

given the fact I don't see a single new 500 unit in your image, I'm gonna guess this was during the launch days
nowadays, the matchmaking works better ("failed matchmaking" means it just couldn't find players, not that it actually failed, because bandai can't do anything right)
>relatively even skill distrib
this is a carry game, you'll see S- having to coddle a bunch of A flat tards, so yeah
>the last 2
just luck depending on what players you get, I prefer leavers/DC because then the match doesn't count in terms of rating and I can just do whatever I want to try out new strats
>i'm afraid it has killed gundam games in the west
as retarded as bandai is, releasing GBO2 on PC was their biggest injection of cash because of chink whales who wanted AU suits, so they clearly did something right

Not quite the myomer but the interface with the brain, alas, battletech is an universe with decaying tech and thus these brain interface went from controlling the mech entirely with your mind to just using your brain to keep the mech upright by using your sense of equilibrium.
Also there are a shit ton of non humanoid mecha which can't really be controlled like your body, so the interface is not exactly 1 to 1 with your body. Goodluck trying to pilot a FLEA with your body just as it is, you don't even have the muscles in the same place as the legs

The revenant is some bull because it actually has "arms", weapon arm pivots. So controlling that shit would require two more extremities if using the body as the interface with a 1 to 1 connection

I am fortunate enough to have played it in the arcade. Twin stick interface. Faster FPS on the triforce I think?

>>714878420
It feels natural in the cockpit. It doesn't translate well to video, because the robots are incredibly responsive and the small stick changes make it look jerky. It's not just lockon. You control rotation, which is independent of your direction of movement. You have a jump, a jump cancel, a dash, advanced dash movements like canceling, hard pivot and change direction, slide/strafe specific attacks . You can divert your dash boosters into your weapons and block. The depth is comparable to a fighting game.

So, at 7 seconds, fei yen, the pink robot is dashing away after a knockdown to get behind cover, for the counter attack. Jumps, does an air dash while firing. Temjin tries to dodge and counter with a sword attack, thinking feiyen will come in after her dash and whiffs. But in the webm it looks super twitch. Slow it down and you can see it easier.

Tabletop movement turn speed is an abstraction, and one of the worse ones that never made much sense. They're not tank controls turning while running at 100 kilometers an hour and jetpacking into the air, neither of which ever get well represented in the games. They had movement speed pivoting in the same era that the books said they could do handstands.

They're both anime based, so they're super fast, but VO is even more deep and responsive. No shade on people who like their giant robots weighty and ponderous. If you get a chance though, try it, as VO has some good heavyweight mech play too.

Old-style controls are a necessity. Slow turning and awkward movement both add to the feeling of piloting a machine while also making joysticks and throttles viable to actually play with. Modern WASD+mouse controls for mech games just turn them into subpar FPS games.

I'm biased because Mechwarrior 3 is the first mecha simulation I got (buying a Sidewinder joystick)
I suppose it was the BEST for what computer were capable of at the time.

Nowadays, I'm annoyed by every "Mecha = Tank mechanic" or "Mecha = Sword fighting humanoid"
I want a game where the mecha walk actually get them to cross obstacle that block every lesser vehicle.
Something like a literal Mudrunner.

By then Microsoft turned the license into shit. Trying to win player with shiny visual effect while making the mecha feel like plastic toys instead of machine of several tons

In comparison, the graphic style of Mechwarrior 3 made them more "realistic" even it's the gritty effect.

This one will always have a special place in my heart. I love the strike series, and this is a pretty good port of battlemech into its engine. Mech battles can be tough though, those fuckers will get ya.

I was going to say modern game have simplistic control, but if we are honest, new game simply learned to have more efficient keys combination and didn't use buttons for pointless feature.

You donโ€™t have to play fast. The game is all about tempo control and using cover to your advantage. It doesnโ€™t matter how much of a spazz your opponent is, if you can take advantage of cover and obstacles you control the game.

The way it worked was the camera would always be locked in one direction while you can move in 8 directions, but when you jump or dash and attack then the camera would quickly lock on and track the enemy.

It sounds weird but it works with the game mechanics, you had three ranged weapons and all of them would auto-lockon and shoot tracked projectiles, if you get close enough any shoot button instead becomes a devastating melee attack.

So all the dashing around and shit is partly being a spaz, avoiding enemy fire, or keeping an eye on them.

Mwo is the best mechwarrior because it has the best enemy ai (actual players) and all mechs actually have value instead of lights just being early game fodder.

This is a good bait. MWO is only still around because it has literally no competition (hopefully Engines of Destruction will fix that). Otherwise, there aren't many things in that game that are actually done right. The more you play it and understand the game, the more clearly you can see how lazy and inapt PGI are (and how retarded the Cauldron is).

I remember back in the day if your weight class was bigger you could just run the fuck over smaller mechs and topple them, but anyone running around in a Raven with a targeting laser was based if you were playing a missile boat
