One of my friends keeps telling me to play this but it just looks like third person Rust. Is it a persistent MMO? Why the fuck are people playing it? Like what is the unique draw of this game over all the other PVP focused survival games out there?

Im not a dune expert but the universe could be a draw to some
Im a little tempted but I’d really only want to play with my brother and he’s a console pleb. Console release is next year for some reason and there’s been no mention of cross play
It doesn’t seem like there’s a terrible focus on pvp until endgame. So we could play without worrying about getting raided

If I understand correctly there’s the main zone where there’s either no pvp or only in certain areas and as long as you pay rent your base is safe
Then there’s the deep desert where your base is still relatively safe, you just have to power it, with brief moments of vulnerability and a weekly reset. So the only real pvp area is pursuing tier 6 resources

You have two zones, hagga basin and the deep desert. Hagga is like fallout 76/pve rust and the deep desert is pvp but like half of it is pve but like half the resources spawn in the pve area so everyone builds their base right at the border between pve and pvp so people cant raid their base.

Ok I get it.

Is the game actually fun or does it feel like a janky action combat MMO?

I've got well over 100 hours into it. For the most part the game is a somewhat generic but fun survival experience. The dune elements elevate the experience immensely, for those that actually care. For those that don't care about dune, the survival stuff is reasonably well done, up to a point. The first main map is actually quite well done and the story surprisingly good (again, especially so if you like dune) but this all falls off of a cliff once you leave the starting map and go to the deep desert. The game quality, gameplay, the overall experience just nose dives there. The good parts being the starter map will easily last you dozens of hours, if not close to 100. So the deep desert bullshit is definitely very late game shit. It is also entirely optional and pointless unless you want to engage with pvp.

Basically, there are 6 tech tiers in the game. 1 through 5 are in the starter zone along with ALL of the story stuff. Tier 6 is only available in the deep desert. Tiers 5 and below are very fun to progress through and experience with a nicely handmade map to explore. Tier 6 in the deep desert is not fun at all, its massive and mostly empty. You just fly over sand dunes doing the same harvesting you did elsewhere, but far, FAR less of it because resources are so scarce and spread out with the added pvp element. I won't even get into the griefing/hacking aspects of this, thats a whole other story.

My opinion as someone who liked the game? Give it at least 6 months before jumping in. The devs have a lot of things to work out, the game needs to find its real identity.

its garbage, save your money. if you really want an open world sandbox mmo then try mortal online 2 as it has an actual community and clans fighting one another over territory
the pvp in dune is broken and boils down to spamming rockets from your orni
the devs are morons and i cant see them fixing things or changing the current 'meta' at all

I got about 140 hours into it and im just now making forward operating bases in the deep desert to make plastic ingots and spice so yeah it's pretty fun. Once you have everything made or get ganked and lose everything the desire to play craters though if you're playing solo. I guess if you're in a guild and you have autism, kitting everyone up could be fun.

it's ok if you really really really like dune, quite grindy and tedious though, most of the good is countered by something equally bad and stupid
I cannot advise you strongly enough against what >>714898647 is suggesting, mortal online is one of the worst ""games"" ever made and the devs are totally fucking incompetent and this anon is a freak for even suggesting it
